What do people out there use for group photos (family portraits etc)? I was thinking of a zoom for flexibility, is 28mm on APS-C too long. I have really been eyeing the Tamron 28-75 F2.8 ($400 range) and I have heard that its one of the best third party lenses. What are your thoughts?

Tamron 28-75 is great. The Canon 85mm 1.8 is a badass lens as well.

So 28mm would be wide enough you think?

Just a note of caution to that line of thinking (is it WIDE enough?). You probably already know this, so this is only a reminder:

Wide lenses can create all kinds of problems with distortion if you're not careful. Even when shooting a large group, and using the Canon 24-70 2.8L lens (that's my answer to your question), I'll try to keep the lens as close to 50mm as possible (this is on the 5D which is full frame, so 50mm is where I want to be). If that means backing up, I back up. If I simply cannot back up, THEN I'll go wide. But that's my last resort.
