I think the main meaning of side challenges is to challenge yourself daily while the side challenge is ongoing. That means getting out and taking a photo on the day (or pretty close, if you are busy a day or two). Not digging into the archives and posting a shot. We could all do that, not much challenge to that.

I agree with the general philosophy, but the reality for many of us is that our work hours and home duties Monday to Friday often do not allow us to get out on anything close to a daily basis (especially during the time of the year when sunset occurs before we leave work). Thus the choice becomes
a) submit 2-3 new decent quality photos per week
b) submit 2-3 new decent quality and some additional new awful ones per week
c) submit 2-3 new decent quality photos supplemented by some old decent quality ones per week

I would argue that submitting real bad ones just to get the numbers up (option b) is counterproductive -- waste of the my time processing the images, and waste of the time of the people providing comments because I already know that the ugly ones are ugly and that they are beyond repair.

On the other hand, submitting a few decent older ones along with a few decent new ones (option c) has a number of advantages. First, it allows me to get useful feedback about my previous decent quality (but perhaps not superb) photos, which can be very useful. Second, I enjoy seeing what other people have been able to do well with the topic of the side challenge, including if taken in the past, as it can give me great new ideas for my own photos in the future. For example, this time of year it is unlikely any dpc member will be on the Dry Tortugas and be able to submit of new photo of it, but having an older one posted in this side challenge allows me to appreciate the beauty of the area and think about what I might do next time I am in such an environment.

Thus I would argue that a healthy mixture of old and new is fine as well.

Reflections in water on the road (not a body of water, but I think it still fits):

Yes, DNMC, in my opinion. Ask the person that started the side challenge for their opinion.

I've seen some leeway in these side challenges of about 3-5 days, but this is a "30 DAY in November" 2007 challenge Sometimes people submitt 3 for the last 3 days, that's slightly bending the Minimal amount of rules.

I did a lot of composite images in my fork challenge, it wasn't basic/advanced, but anything went. More like a no-rules, Free Study.

The challenge is coming up with ideas and practicing your current techiques.
Don't worry if the subject isn't the optimum. This is also practice and preparation for that excellent moment that may arrive at a future date.

No voting here, but I hope to see lots of honest critiques/suggestions. I can take the bad news and good news.

Yes, any form of water is great.

Some ideas:
(From a previous post)

Shower, brush, gargle, rinse, drain, flush, wash, drink, freeze, boil, mix, bubbles, jell, splash, splat, squish, slip, slide, stomp, spray, ride, see, fall, destroy, nurture, grow, replenish, dry, saturate, jets, hosed, filtered, spilled, drenched, dampened, float, sink, sway, carve, rise, shoot, squirt, surf, fish, skate, ski...

Here is a list of just some of the things water, mixed with other things and moved by air can do. From Morning to Night we all encounter it in some form, can't live without it.

Without food you can survive even a week, but without water, I think it's only three days.

Our friend, the Water Planet.

Glad you consider it a DNMC rather than DQ, I can live with that. But you really don't want to see my ugly photos, trust me.

ErikV, it's only Day 2 and you have already submitted 4 photos; if it is your intention to submit previosities, how many of them? Of course that is none of my business, and I don't have to comment on them, but I do feel you are missing something by not at least trying the daily exercise. How do you know a picture is ugly until you take it? How do we know a picture is ugly period? yospiff's recent entry is IMO an excellent example of what we're doing. It may not be beautiful by your standards, but it is a fine example of the art of seeing through a camera.

It was raining today so I could not get out to take any water photos. Ha! Actually it was really, really windy and the rain was drifting. I opened the front door to check my mail and got soaked! I've taken photos outdoors in the rain before but not in drifting rain. So I played in the kitchen. I put water in a bowl and put oil on top of that. Then a few drops of blue food colouring. Eventually the bubbles would burst and the blue food colouring would sink to the bottom. I got a few neat pics out of it.

Well now I am day behind. Went out yesterday evening to shoot at a spot I like to go, but it was closed at 4 :-( so I went today so here is my day 1.

yospiff's recent entry is excellent!!! Once I get out of work this weekend, I hope to do as well as he does.

Regarding how to know that a picture is ugly, try submitting something less than stellar to a main challenge, your score will tell you in no uncertain terms! Been there, done that (all too often, I am afraid).

EricV, ALL my entries are less than stellar; here to learn just how and why unstellar. Maybe. Sometimes I just enjoy the pain without learning anything. Good luck this weekend.

Check out the TEXTURES side challenge. On day 1, one person submitted 25 photos at a time, someone else submitted 7 at at time. On day 2, one person submitted 14 photos at a time. Makes me seem downright lazy and slothful by comparison.

And I didn't even include the egret that was just outside the frame.

Wow, I'm pleased to be getting so many positive comments! I just wish I could do that well in a challenge. One of my best shots is doing almost an even "5" right now.

BTW, which of my entries in this thread are you referring to? I submitted the reflecting taillights and the water rushing through the river.

yospiff, I meant the reflections on very wet pavement and your comment thereon; totally forgot you were the same(?) person. So objective am I. (Enough righteousness from me on this thread!)

So glad I didn't enter the textures side challenge.

Leaves on water. Taken with a Panasonic LX1 point and shoot. I have been having problems with getting color to show up correctly on the web. Hopefully it won't appear washed out. Edited in Photoshop and converted to RGB before saving for web.

Ok all, I got the hint about posing an archive pic. I just decided to jump in, and didn't have any water shots for the day, as it was late at night here.
Water is not as common as it usually is in the S Florida area now, as we are in the worst drought on record at this time.
DPC'ers do go to Dry Tortugas this time of year. The Florida Keys GTG was there in Oct.

I'm not just gonna do bodies of water lol. If I see water of any form, and it looks cool enough to try, I'm gonna share it with you all. So bear with me lol

Day 2

I just showed this to my husband and he noticed my reflection in the top of the waterspout where the white highlights are. The reflection was unintentional but it is cool now that I know it is there.

OK, managed to get out of work on time, and was able to take some new photos late this afternoon just before sunset. Hopefully 4 hours old is fresh enough for the anti-archive group. :-)

If you want, we can count this as my #1 submission for the challenge, and consider the previous ones as the pre-season.
