I can't believe I've missed nearly two months of DPC - totally involuntary of course. While my internet has worked for most of the other sites I've wanted, it's refused to let me onto DPC most of the time. Complaints to my service provider have given no assistance. Nothing I tried on my computer seemed to work. Occasionally it would give me something like this:
[thumb]607711[/thumb]
More often, just the message "The website cannot display the page".

Then a few days ago the computer started updating something on Java, and I got onto DPC but with errors. It felt hopeful, but the next night it was gone again. Last night I downloaded something (I think Flash 8.0 ??) that another site asked for and the site was back with errors. Miraculously tonight it's still here, though I can't see most of the photos, so I can't vote.

In the mean time, I've been deleting old unwanted emails (which I rarely do) and favourites which are long forgotten but cluttering things up. Perhaps that's what's made the difference. My father suggested it may be a memory problem, but with 1.25GB, I'm not convinced. I'll have to see if deleting a bit more will help. I want to vote again, and I want to enter challenges. But for now, at least there's the forums, so I can start catching up on all the news. Just as long as DPC doesn't disappear again, which could happen any time.

That was the only suggestion my service provider ever came up with. I did download Firefox, but it's been just as bad. And under the circumstances, I couldn't be bothered to get used to a new browser. If it has made a difference, it would have been worth it, but I've tried it many times over the last 2 months, and at best I've got a few more lines that I did in Internet Explorer.

As a test, briefly disable your security software/antivirus and see if that helps.

Although I haven't had the problem myself, I have seen in the forums this solve many issues. Then set DPC as a safe page or your software's equivalent.

The only thing I seem able to disable is the firewall, and that has made no difference. I've also tried disabling my accelerator program (I'm still on dial-up) which sometimes helps, but no luck with this problem. I've arranged to change to ADSL, but there's a bit of a delay there, though it should be available in a couple of weeks. I don't know if it will help with this, but when working on stock sites(uploading big files) it should make a huge difference.

prior to this last monday your screen shot is what my DPC looked like when I tried to access it from work. Sometimes I would get a few lines other times everything would work until I clicked a link, then just partial stuff and html code again. This last week they came through and installed all new CPUs and now it works perfectly. Not sure what the issue was (other than the other CPUs being pieces of crap) so I can't offer any more help than a new system fixed it for me...probably not a good option for you.

I would do as advised and check the antivirus/firewall and security settings in IE options. If you can guess when the issue may have started, you might also be able to open your windows backup/restore option and see if anything was installed/updated around that date.

Good luck and welcome back.

Disabling the firewall doesn't seem to help. For some reason disabling antivirus doesn't seem possible. I'm not sure what else to check. I did try system restore about a month ago and that was no help at all.

I've had this problem (with different sites) for short periods in the past and it's usually just gone away after a few days, but 2 months is really painful. I've been feeling totally lost on the internet because whatever else I'm busy with, I've always got DPC open - both voting and forums. The forums at the stock sites are really boring by comparison.

Thanks. I just hope I really am back and that this isn't a one-day wonder.

Good to see you're back. I wonder if your problem is connected with where you live in the world. You might try to ping DPC from time to time and see what kind of packet delays you are getting. An example below. The command would be "ping www.dpchallenge.com" then hit enter.
You'll have to open a MS-DOS command prompt window.

C:\> ping www.dpchallenge.com

Pinging www.dpchallenge.com [198.77.14.211] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 198.77.14.211: bytes=32 time=30ms TTL=51

Ping statistics for 198.77.14.211:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 30ms, Maximum = 33ms, Average = 31ms

Results should be as above but with much longer time=XXX because you are on dialup. You might even want to look at more echos by executing the command with the following switches:
"ping -n 32 www.dpchallenge.com" This will cause the ping command to look for 32 echos from the distant end before completion. If you get a bunch of dropped packets you might want to investigate with the tracert
command. Try "tracert www.dpchallenge.com"

Your results will look something like this with a much different route.
Someone who works with internet communications in your area might be able to find the problem area with the above print from your computer.
This is just a guess and obviously relies on your running Windows XP. But.... the ping and tracert (traceroute) commands are available on most other OS's with a different command structure. I've seen people have problems like yours caused by network configuration and crowding problems. But not for 2 months. When you upgrade to DSL your problem may go away. Another quick test would be to invite a friend over who has a laptop with dialup. If the problem still exists it may point towards network problems. In any event, good luck. Sure will be more fun voting with the faster DSL!

Thanks, fir3bird. I've printed this out and I'll try to work out what it all means. So far my situation is the same as last night - everything's working except for most of the photos. Not quite what you want from a photography site!

My mum and dad were having problems with dialup and they spoke to the server who suggested that they completely unplug their phone and fax while they were on the net and this worked brilliantly. Not sure what their symptoms were but its worth a try.
