Greetings DPC!

I seek your advice. I am interested in obtaining a apprenticeship/assistantship to learn and grow from. First to clarify so that I don't get ripped a new one by the forum. I DO NOT REQUIRE A SALARY. While any money I would receive would be put towards the fund that is currently working to purchase gear, the experience and contacts are what I am after. I have full time employment, but am considering the jump to either part or full time photography and clearly want to study under another or others before getting myself in deep.

So, what is the suggestion or suggestions?? Cold call seems logical but rather presumptuous. Random stalking seems out of the question as it is out of my character. I am in a mid market at best in the Research Triangle (those in the area would know where this is) sorry to non US folks who probably do not know where that is.

Thanks in advance for any advice you might have.

Mike

find the local PPA or pro organization - google it.
join as a student or assoc member, or attend a meeting.
you'll learn, but also meet local photogs - you will have access to their newsletter or website and can ask there for a position.

what you are looking for is an internship, an unpaid one. This is common in many many fields - college kids get a 4 month job that is related to their major, often 20 hours a week, sometimes paid and sometimes not, and their boss fills out evaluations and the intern gets college credits, and learns, gets experience and often a permanent job after graduation.

Internship Desk

Have you not seen this thread?

Hey thank you both for your replies. As to the Internship Desk link. I have seen it, and it is an excellent resource, but I am hours away from any and everything on that thread. As a married man with a job I can't pick up and move for a NY internship I am afraid. So while an excellent resource I am sure for many the reason for my original post is because I am looking for some advice or someone local to me.

The problem is that most working photographers are full time too. They won't be willing to schedule around you.

then it's not an internship, or apprenticeship you seek.

it is a workshop, a mentor, or even a photographic tour.

Internships usually are looking for hungry, out of college, looking to do anything to get into that door, doesn't know a thing but what the professor taught, person.

You don't fit into that category.

Check out the Workshop Desk, I am pretty sure there is one near you. If not, let me know and I will pull my resources to find one for you.

Check the PPA site or magazine (subscribe for $20/year). Lots of PPA schools and workshops in there, week long ones on just about any subject you could want.
I just took one on fine art - lots of PS info, sales info, etc - a lot more than fine art. The Timmons' did the seminar and will have a week long school in March here.
//www.gallery143.com/ is their site.
//www.photoeducation.com/timmons.html is more of what they teach.
