I can't wait, oh joy! I am at the top of the waiting list in 3 places too!
I was told that the Nikon D300 and D3 are being shipped by air on the 15th and will here in North America between 15-21st of Nov. And I am going to a D300 seminar tomorrow!
BTW: Is there any questions that I should ask while I am there?

Q: by what glorious amount can we expect the D200 to drop by? :-P |

I will expect the D200 for about 1200-1300$, no more than that! |

Q: Are they ready to handle the consumer demand for the D300 and D3 unlike they where when the D200 came out. |

*UPDATE***
I just got back the the D300 seminar today.
So, I got to play with the Nikon D300 with a 24-70mm 2.8 lens.
I must say I can only bring good news. I can't comment on high ISO's since with out real world testing. But I will comment/answer some questions that I had.
Compared to D200
Ergonomics: Better! Doesn't feel sticky but still has better grip, because the front the the grip has a wider curve. Using the front dial doesn't feel like I am going to accidentally turn the camera on or off. The weight is more even through out the camera (not as side heavy). The multi-directional pad seems much more accurate too (easier to use).
Viewfinder: Big and bright! A nudge bigger than the D200.
Auto focusing: (using the 24-70mm 2.8) OMGWTFBBQ and the D3 is suppose to be faster than instant?!!!?!? (in low light that is [well nearly instant)
Controls and menus: With all the great customs setting that the D300 allows.. The D300 also has "My menu" that you customize your own menu! (i.e. freqeutly used menu options and functions can be stored there)

The "official" word from Thom Hogan is the 23rd for the D300, and the 31st for the D3.

I saw a couple guys wielding the new D3 at the Steelers game yesterday. Some of the bigwigs, like Sports Illustrated, have already gotten theirs. When I saw a guy with two D3s, I asked him how he got them, and he very smugly and condescendingly said, "They sent them to me."
So either the guy had been asked this question a 999,999 times already yesterday and I was number 1 million, or he was just one of those smug photographer buttheads that frequent the stadium. I'm guessing a little of both. |

Good News - can't wait!
How do you know when you will get yours, though? I preordered mine from Ritz Camera (online) 4 days ago. In what order are they being shipped out and to the people who bought them? |

I went to Hunts Photo today because the Nikon rep was there. i played with the new D300 and all I can say is WOW!!!! I will be preordering mine with a vertical grip and the en-el4a battery to shoot gymnastics with. This means as soon as I get mine, i will be putting the D200, battery grip and batteries up for sale. Woo Hoo.

In anticipation of receiving my D300 at the end of the month, I took a deep breath and . . . sold my D200. I've been without a camera for two weeks now. I sold it on Craig's List for $1,200.00. I included in the battery grip and 2 batteries. These items were in their boxes and looked as they did when I bought them. If you're thinking of doing the same thing, you should do it now - it'll be a buyer's market this time next week. |

You just don't know how to have fun Alan. You should have asked him: "You still shooting D2X???" "I thought all the Pros shot Canon?" Then watch him follow you around and explain. LOL

Probably would have looked dumb as I stood in front of him with two Nikons draped over my shoulder, though :) |

Wow you are brave. What if you get a note from Nikon saying you weren't one of the lucky ones that gets to receive one of the 150 cameras they were able to produce? ;) |

Hey, just to give everyone a heads up... I just got a call from my local brick & mortar camera shop, and was told that my D300 will be available on Wednesday the 21st! They will give me a call when it's ready to be picked up!
Woot! |

The D3 was a big hit at Photo Expo West. One of the highlights of the weekend was a photo Tony Corbell took on the beach of a model. He was using an ISO of 25600 and using light from his cell phone to illuminate the model.
