For $500 I have the opportunity to get a previously owned Nikon D80 camera body and a damaged kit lens that came with it (not sure right now of the lens size.) Apparently the lens was dropped when it was off the camera body, therefore the camera body is fine. I know nothing about the previous owner or the over all condition of the set other than what has been told to me.
The camera body and lens were insured together and the insurance company paid the full insurance replacement amount and retained the camera body and lens for salvage. The insurance company has now offered the damaged lens and camera body for $500. So far there are no takers.
I am not really in the market to get a new camera but I suppose I could pick this one up. Does anyone have a strong feeling as to whether this would definitely be a good deal or a potential bad one?

| At the very least, you could probably sell the body at no loss. |

| I'd see if I could borrow a lens before buying. And I agree, at the least you can sell it. I've seen a couple of D80 bodies on Craigslist for around 800 and you can buy one new for 875 from BHphoto. |

If you can afford to get it, you will probably like it, and manual Nikon lenses back to about 1973 will work on it, so used ones are plentiful, and relatively inexpensive. If you were a film SLR shooter, you may enjoy the older lenses as I do.
I agree with missinseattle about getting a lens and checking it out before buying it. Maybe one of your local friends is a Nikon owner and would check it out for you, or allow you to use a lens for that.

How old is the camera and how many miles does it have on it?
Three things I would ask myself here:
1) Why did he make a claim for both the camera and lense when only the lense dropped?
2) Why would the insurance company take it back and pay it out if there is nothing wrong with the camera? It would seem that they don't trust the previous owner and wanted to check things out for themselves or upon an examination of the claim they found that there was nothing wrong and it was to late.
3) The lense is most likely the AF-S NIKKOR 18-70mm 1:3.5-4.5 ED it is a nice lense and not to much $$$ but you are not far off the cost of a new D 80 and you would know for sure that it was never dropped, so is it worth the $500,00 for a camera you are not sure about or the extra$$$ for one you are.
Just some thoughts, hope it helps.
