I'm finally getting a chance to get caught up with TS thread (two straight weeks at work without a break - I don't even have an update button to hit right now - it's killing me!!!) and I was so sad to see your post, NikonJeb Jeb. You've been through a lot lately, especially with a recent death in the family, and it seems like you are punishing yourself for scores and being really down on yourself. I think it was Jayson who said that making it as a professional photographer really has a lot more to do with business/marketing sense than being a DPC superstar, and I couldn't agree more. The first time my photos got rejected by a jury it hurt so badly I thought I would die. But I just kept plugging along and practicing technique again, and again and again until I finally feel like I'm at least starting to get the technical aspects of photography - I've got a decent camera body, one good lens, a great tripod, and a lot of stubborn perseverance - and it will go a long way (I need to sell a lot more stuff before I let myself buy a better camera or any L glass).
And basssman7, I'm so jealous! I want to take pictures of waterfalls!!!

Glad you liked it. :)

I agree, too, but credit goes to jaysonmc.

Okay.....I'm trying something dfifferent.
I'm entering a shot that I had some friends who are photogs review, and they all loved it. I like it, but I don't think it's spectacular, it's just a good shot.
I won't go into what challenge, but it is one of this week's offerings.
So we'll see.

Still trying to get some editing done (just the basics - levels, curves, sharpen, resize) and will post some pics when I get that done (and get access again... internet access here is more precious than gemstones, I tell ya!)
Anyway, lots of good advice. Jeb - I, too, get mightily frustrated, and I have pretty damn decent equipment, so it's not that. I usually (but not always) accept that I don't have the artistic vision of the top scorers, but I do have my own vision, and that's equally important in the larger scheme of things. Same is true for you. My vision, and my inability to "see" what can be wrought from a picture, will always limit me and though I'll b!tch about it (just ask Timfy - he gets the brunt of it when I have IM capability) I really do accept what I do as "mine" - and I like it. |

Awesome photos, Deb! I'm glad you are getting a chance to get out and see some of the aspects of Afghanistan other than the military base, which must get mighty old after awhile. |

I left a note on the thread, but I'll reiterate here that you have put images of real life to those that I've carried in my head from reading Michener's "Caravans" years ago. The country and its people look as wild and beautiful as I'd long thought.
Thank you for bringing Afghanistan to life for us, Deb.

Great Afghan pics! If you visit the Canadian area, can you post a pic of the Timmies? (Tim Hortons)
Thanks, and be safe,
Ernie |

Deb, glad you are getting photo ops. Stay safe.
Hey all ... the year has flown and I just renewed my membership. I hope not to take 4 months off during this run! |

Deb, your time (in warm places) must be almost up - please stay safe!
Finally, have entered a shot in Something New. Dang, been so long I had to think and remember what an f-stop was and which one I used when filling out the entry form!
Beware Brown Ribboners, snaffles is back!!!!:-) |

(This is in Kandahar, a NATO camp - lots of Canadians, Aussies, Brits, French (yes, French!) and a whole host of others. Interesting dining facilities with a definite European flavor to them.)
And I've got about 2 1/2 months to go... I'll be here in Afghanistan for awhile longer, then probably head back to Kuwait again. I hope to get to Qatar for a few days, and if at all possible, may try to get to Al Asad in Iraq so I can visit Fetor. Plus, our staff veterinarian (she was here for a visit - took her more than three days to finally get a flight out) tells me that Balad is the best place she's been so far, so maybe I need to go there, too. I mean if I'm gonna visit the Middle East, I may as well visit, right? |

Hi Svetlana!!! Been wondering where you've been. I'm so sorry to hear it's been a horrible year - I know you had a lot of trouble recovering from your accident - I hope other things are going well for you? Anyway, great to have you back. |

You're always welcome here, Svetlana - and the year wasn't all bad - remember Muenster?? :-)
For the Canadians, I am actually quite familiar with Tim Hortons. They have one where my dad lives in West Virginia and I go there every morning when I visit him for coffee and at least a box of Timbits. Usually more, though.... |

Thanks for the pic of the Timmies! I think it is great that they went through the trouble of putting one there to make all the soldiers feel a bit more comfortable. :)

Major good news that it's all over.
That's if it's the horrible stuff that's all over.
The year's not over is it? I haven't had my birthday yet - and what about Christmas?
So there must be some good stuff that isn't all over.
That's what's left when the horrible stuff is all over.
Just good stuff.
Sounds great.
Yes, come back, tell NikonJeb (and me) about the good stuff.

Hi Svetlana. I'm so glad you're back. I think of you often and wonder how and what you are doing. Sorry to hear you had a "horrible year", and I'm happy to hear it is over for you. Welcome back! |

Welcome back, Svetlana. Put the bad behind you and look forward to sunny days.
Jeb, you did things the wrong way. You join TS cos you suck, and then hopefully improve, not the other way round. We all feel down when a photo doesn't score as we hoped, but that's life. If you feel you have improved and learned whilst being a member of DPC, then there is no reason to be down.
I still suck, my imagination and vision hasn't improved, but I think I have found a subject for photography that means I can compete on a level playing field(Man, I hate that term! Almost as much as In an ideal world!!) I get disappointed when I read threads where it seems everyone wants to be a Pro or start a business as a Photog...once it is your means of income and everyday job, the fun goes from what was a hobby. Start a business if you think that is your path, if the desire is there, then go for it. If you don't, you will regret it for the rest of your life.
Or, be like me and others here. Just enjoy your hobby, take shots and bugger the scores. You only live once, and you need something to fall back on during the bad times.
Good Luck with whatever your choice:) |

You silly goose!
It's you!
I was just looking at your portfolio the other day and missing you.
What makes all the imgaes so special is that with each story that you tell, you put something of yourself into all of them and that brings them to life.
You *are* life, dear girl, beautiful, enchanting, imaginative, artistic, living, breathing life.
And I'm glad you're back to spend time with us!
And especially will Chasing Butterflies be glad to see you back with your kick-ass scores! LOL!!!
