I have noticed a focus problem with my 100-400L when I have zoomed in on a leaf or such. I have to manually focus it or zoom back out, focus, then go back in and it will usually lock at that time. Does this indicate a problem with the lens? I don't remember ever having such an event with my last 100-400L.
I am asking if this is normal. Should one first focus in on a distant object before zooming in?

I find this lens hunts a bit at times. It's usually due to the lack of contrast in the subject.

Changing the range of focus sometimes helps (see switch on side of lens - 1.6 to infinity or 6.5 to infinity - or something like that). Choose the range that suits your situation.

That is the first thing I check Colette, but the same thing happens. Perhaps it is just a matter of singling out one leaf among so many LOL But the one I pick is illuminated by sun so I would think there is enough contrast. If others experience the same thing, then I won't worry about it. I just got this leans and I am the 3rd owner, so I may be looking for problems :)

And Dave - how sweet of you to offer yourself like that. Ha!
