One thing that I really regret about how I got into the Wedding Photography business, is that I simply jumped in feet first without really having any idea what I was doing. Sure, I learned a lot along the way. But it was tough slugging it out and, even now, I still feel I have a lot to learn.

But one of the FUNNEST ways to learn, I think, is to play Second Shooter with an experienced photographer. I wish I had done this years ago.

These are some sample pictures from Friday's wedding where *I* got to play second shooter. :-)

I LOVE LOVE LOVE second shooting! I get to mess around as much as I want and don't have to process a thing I don't want to! :0P

Don't you feel way more creative freedom when you're not so worried about getting the shot each time? Last time I did it I went all manual and I didn't do great but I think I'm getting the hang of it!

Looks like you got some great shots David!!! :0D

Well... I help make her look good! lol (don't tell her I said that) Actually, I LOVE shooting with her. She is *so* full of energy and fun to work with.

That's for sure. I don't come home from the wedding with HOURS upon hours of work to do. All of the fun, without all of the back end drudgery. :-)

Yes, since I know she is getting "the" shot, I feel free to play with something different. A different angle, a different focus, a different composition. I wish I could do that when I'm the main photographer... sometimes I have time. Most times I don't.

i really like studying your photos, there is a lot to learn in them... the way you crop is interesting... the poses creative... and you do get the right exposure which is something I really take note of. Thank you.

Most of my crops are straight out of the camera that way. Many of these are shot really tight. I have some others, especially group shots and such, which I like but just didn't feel like sharing.

Thanks for your comments! :-)

Wow! Having you as second shooter would be like Bill Gates assisting the help desk! Great work as usual David, thanks for sharing.

Somehow ... I think playing second shooter sounds like a lot more FUN than working the help desk!!! (been there, done that!)

Thanks! :-)

I don't often see wedding photos I like. But I'll have to say those are just stunning. You have a gift for capturing the deep feelings. Beautiful work Terry!

I got it and thought it was funny coming from mobster.

David - I also appreciate your posts, your images and sharing your tips! I don't think I'll ever be a wedding photog or maybe not any photog, but I still learn alot and am inspired in many ways by what you bring to DPC. Thanks!

Thanks Art... I've learned a lot from the DPC community and I really enjoy sharing. Comments like yours make it all worthwhile.

nice work! nothing like having the pressure taken off you as the lead photog to open up creatively :-) i played second shooter at my brother's wedding, at least for the time leading up to the ceremony (i was best man, tough to do both jobs)

Almost always the Canon 70-200 2.8L IS. I switched to a super wide (Tamron 17-35) a few times for effect.

When I'm the main photographer, I use the Canon 24-70 2.8L a LOT more. I usually have it on the Canon 5D and the 70-200 on the Mark III and shoot both cameras (carrying two bodies keeps me from having to change lenses).

But since I was playing second shooter I only rarely changed lenses and only a few times used the 24-70 when I was shooting the "group photos" (backing up the main photographer in case anything went wrong).
