Thanks to all who voted and commented on my Insects entry - my new highest rated photo. Several comments were left wanting to see more of the bug, and to know what kind of bug it was. So here are my Insects outakes. And here's a follow-up challenge: can anyone name that bug??? I have no idea what it is, it just showed up in our living room one day. |

The "insect" is in the Hymenoptera Order, a "true bug", Yhis order includes the stink bug and boxelder bug families. The insect has adapted to immitate a rose thorn, and some folks call then leafbugs. Not sure the real name, but this is where you might reasearch a bit. Van

What I submitted:
What I should have submitted:
Neither of these shots had a lot of sharpening or color adjustment, they just had different lighting and angles of light. I see now that the second one is probably a better lit shot and is more pleasing... if looking at this ugly thing can pleasing :-)

Just out of curiosity, did some people vote lower on this photo because they thought I did something 'illeagle'? I had several disqualification requests on it, which really brought my spirit down since it's only the second time I've posted to a challenge. On the other hand, thanks to all those who voted high on it.

Nobody should be scoring low for suspected illegal edits, as the rules are real explicit about voting as if it's legal. I suspect that some people just weren't real crazy about the abstract quality of the reflection. To be honest, I voted 6, but looking at it right now, I think that was a generous 6. It was an interesting technique, which did grab my attention, but on closer scrutiny, I'm not wild about the quality of either the mantis or it's reflection. I guess what I'm saying is that, on the whole, the technique probably helped you and got rewarded by a higher score, but for others the effect wasn't appealing, and they voted accordingly. (As always, no accounting for trolls.)
BTW, how DID you do it? My initial assumption was that it was a CD, but the more I looked, the less certain I was. |

The mantis on the left is just a photo I took earlier in the week. I carefully set it in front of the mantis on the right and took the photo. Surprisingly, the mantis didn't run away despite the photo being blown over on top of it several times. Thanks for the comment.

Close; the correct order is Hemiptera. (Hymenoptera is the order containing ants and bees.) |

Dr. Rick is correct, Entomology class was 25 years ago. Thanks for the correction. Van |

I loved your photo and your "All-Terrain" title and gave you a 9. I was shocked you didn't come in much higher than you did. I like the one you submitted better than your alternate.

I loved the photo and don't pretend to be expert enough (or in fact at all) to be able to spot the fakes. I don't recall my actual score, but I know it was high. I have had several times when my initial thought was ... that must be fake, and in every case when I have asked I have found them not to be (I have not yet put in a disqual request).
One for instance was on the use of colour on an otherwise b&W photo. I asked on a forum how people do this and learned quite how easy it is to do .... and that no fakery (???) is required.
I was perplexed with this photo as I could not work out how the photo was taken, so I e-mail'd vonautsch and asked. I thought the answer was very clever indeed, and increased my enjoyment of the photo.
