A friend of mine has a 300D, and it has stopped autofocusing. It just hunts back and forth and won't lock onto focus. He has cleaned the lens contacts, and tried with 3 different lenses. Same problem. It hunts all the way out and back again without finding focus.

Anyone know what the problem could be, or what to do to fix it? (Short of sending it to Canon, because he would like to have the camera for christmas).

my best guess would be that the focusing screen has come loose. Not likely a repair you can make at home.

Has the camera experienced a fall or other shock?

I had the dreaded "3/4 of my photo is black" problem with my Rebel, and in my searches I found this place that does most Rebel repairs for $128.00. Canon probably charges $200+. I never sent my camera to them because I'm getting a smokin' deal on a barely used XTi (I pick it up tomorrow). So I can't vouch for them, but the price sure seems right.

I've heard of people replacing the focus screens themselves, with a careful hand and a lot of patience. Would be interesting to somehow work out if this is indeed the case.

Given the cost of repairs, it might be worth him having a go, and if anything bad happens, he could probably pick up a 2nd hand 300D for not much more than the repair cost! If it was me, I'd be giving it a go, but I'll leave it up to him. I won't be trying this on someone else's camera. :)

The focus screen is on the mirror assembly, right?

I just looked it up and found where the focus screen is, up under the viewfinder. Would you see from the viewfinder if the focus screen was moved?
