This part is true only of DPCPrints.

Smugmug lets you (the photographer) set up a "proofing period" of up to 7 days. I don't know why the call it "proof days", but what it really means is that, after a customer has placed the order, you (the photographer) have up to 7 days to replace the photo before it ships automatically. That 7 day period can be adjusted by you to ship immediately, or to give fewer days if you expect your own turn around time to be quicker.

I leave it set to 7 days. Then, if I update the photo before the 7 days are up, I just click the "Ship It Now" button and away it goes.

Anyway, the point is... you can do the same thing as you described. You can upload smaller prints now. Then replace them with larger prints at the time of purchase.

I upload full size prints because I use smugmug as an off site backup of all of my customer's files. BUT, I don't edit anything until after the image has been purchased. So I use the proofing delay to give me a chance to edit the image before it ships.

sorry to disagree, dave, but smugmug is exactly like dpcprints. if you upload a low-res (which, to me, is a 72dpi 640 pixel 70-125 kilobyte image) to smugmug, your customers will not be able to order anything but wallet-sized photos. you have to upload a file that meets ezprint's product menuing guidelines in order to trip the products that will be made available to your potential customers. if you are uploading large files, then this wouldn't be an issue. however, when i have a 200 to 2000 images from an event, i don't have time to 1) process them for print, or 2) upload them straight out of camera. being able to upload websized images was one of the main reasons i switched from smugmug to exposuremanager.

(now, if smugmug has changed their menuing options related to file-sizes, i'll eat crow, but i won't switch back...)

Nope, I think I'll do the eating, thank you very much! (ARGH!)

I *assumed* that with the proof-delay that I could upload a file that was large enough to fulfill the order. I never actually tried ordering a larger print than the file could provide until just now (after reading your comment). And you are CORRECT. It would NOT let me order a print that was larger than what I provided.

Okay then. It's a good thing that I upload full size prints! But I would definitely never do this for a sporting event! There are just way too many images to upload.

When I was looking for a proofing website I ultimately went with www.instaproofs.com. Reason being, they allow me to use the print lab of my choice.

Question for Skip. I use exposure manager but am confused about how to make sure my one large picture is cropped by them correctly when ordering 8x10 vs a 5x7 or 11x14. Do I upload different files for these different sizes? How do you handle this? I typically just upload the original I shot from my 10d but I was reading something in their instructions about formatting for size. That wasn't exactly the way it's worded but something like that. I too chose them for their price over smugmug since I'm just starting out and trying to keep my costs down.

not quite sure, marianne, as i handle all my own prints (which saves me even more money!).

so, 1) their tech support is great. send them an email and they'll get right back to you.

2) sign up for a free photoreflect express digital account, find a lab you like that has good prices, and then use them for your fulfillment. i use richmond camera; their quality is tops and their prices are excellent. i get my 8x10s for a buck, 5x7s for .50, and my 11x14s are under $4.

even though i pick up the overhead for shipping and handling, my packages go out with my branding--not smugmugs or anyone else's...

hope this helps,
