What's the best way to achieve a pure white background in a photo? Same as making an all black one or is it different?

Depends on what you have to work with. Are you trying to avoid shadows. You would try to blow out the background with light. Like I said it all depends on what you are trying to do.

For Instance take this shot:

I actaully used two light Sources for this product shot. One behind/under the sheet and one in front to light the subject. Notice there are no shadows.

Enjoy. Hope I helped.

I usually just use a white card or poster board, at least for studio shots. Keep your subject as far away from the white background as possible.

I use white bed sheet attached to the wall,or when outdoors use white thick paper!

i actually have a light yellow background so i put one light on it and overexpose the b-ground and one for the subject
just bring the subject far enough out so the light on the b-ground doesn't make hot spots on your subject..(see 2nd pic)
something like this

Sounds bad, but, for my frog shots...

and...

I photographed them in a white porcelain dish and then removed any uneven bits of the background in Photoshop.

I would love to get some shots of frogs like this!! Our zoo has a display of poison frogs, but it is very dark and behind glass. I have not been able to get a good photo...
You are lucky to have access to these little guys! Nice work.

My friend keeps them as pets - most of them are poisonous because of what they eat, so you just don't feed them that stuff, and they are okay, so she invited me over to photograph them. I'm really glad I had the chance. Too bad I only got 3 out of the 6 varieties she had.
