Potentially looking at some studio flash lighting... hear good things about both. Anyone prefer one over the other?

Check out Strobist.com.

All about using speedlights (flashes). You can pull out effects like this:

//gallery.cylerparent.com/main.php?g2_itemId=1871

There are better examples at //flickr.com/groups/strobist/

Studio quality lighting on a ghetto budget. I have done a couple paying jobs with this set-up and no comments about appearing low-end (it's about the final outcome anyways).

I use ABees, love them, can't say enough about them. In studio, flashes alone would never give me the flexibility 4 ABs give. Out & about a couple of flashes is great.

I maybe buying lights soon as well and I'm pretty much set on bees.

I will ask for Broncolor for my birthday but I don't think that will happen.

When you say Flashpoints ... you're talking about the same thing as in this thread, right?

I don't have any experience with either (Flashpoint or AB), so I won't directly answer your question. But I thought I'd clear up your question in case people are thinking the flashpoints are merely flashes....

Good point, David. Thanks.

consider this kit

same power and features as the AB800's but for less than AB400s. I have 4 of them and they work great, are durable and the accessories are a tad cheaper than ABs.

they also make 150, 600 and 1000ws units, and kits with softboxes instead of umbrellas.

Hehe you really don't want to buy Broncolor unless you know what you're getting yourself into. I just spent $300 on adapters and that's cheap compared to the other stuff on the list ;)

But damn they're nice =)

One small bag is enough for my light setup, consisting of:
- 3 Flashs (Canon 580Ex + Canon 430Ex + Sigma 500)
- 1 IR transmitter
- 1 Softbox
- 1 Umbrella
- 1 Circular Collapsable Disc Reflector
- 1 Set of colour gels
- 2 small stands
- Several kinds of clamps to fix the flash/reflectors/etc everywhere

Hey Jorge... take a picture of your "bag" and contents ... I'd love to see what it all looks like.

Por favor. :-)

Cool Jorge - makes me even more excited about my very similar in-the-mail flash kit.

One question: You use the softbox with the flashes? How big is it? Is it portable? Do the flashes power it sufficiently? ... Ok, that's four questions! =P

And so the post isn't totally OT, I personally went for the portability and storage benefits of a kit like Jorge's over the more expensive, more powerful studio strobes. And this forum is big on AB's. =)

Softbox
It closes like an umbrella.
Only in one situation I though the power of my flashes wouldn't be enough (it was in my last entry for group portrait), but it worked very well.

For you not to wait for my picture, here's a very similar bag I quickly googled in the net
But this one looks a little bigger than mine
