Okay, I am new here and I wanted to check to see if something is okay before I submit my picture. If this is the wrong place to do it, please let me know, otherwise, anybody that knows the answer please tell me. I used a preset in LR called aged photo. It kind of gives the picture a sepia type feel. I know that b&w is okay, but is this sepia conversion okay too? I feel that it falls under the you may category where it says I can add a filter as long as it affects the entire picture. Somebody please let me know if this is okay.
Thanks

What editing rules are you speaking of, (what challenge)? |

It's ok. If you want to be 100% sure, ask the powers that be by submitting a ticket. |

Yeah ask SC---- I know that the vignette tool in LR has caused a DQ-- better check to be sure.. |

It's quite fine. The sepia is merely tinting a B&W image.

Well, I am pretty sure it is okay, and some of your comments have made me feel like it is, but I took your advice and I submitted a ticket. How do I get the answer, does it come to my email, or do I see it in my profile somewhere? This is the first time I have tried this, I am very new to this site.

You'll get an e-mail response. Keep in mid that SC may be busy and it may take a day or two, especially if we are misbehaving in the forums :-)

Well hopefully it doesn't take them too long, I only have until tomorrow night to enter my pic. Thanks to everybody for their thoughts though.

Just want to add that dutone/tritone has always been legal in Basic, this should not be any different.

can i just add onto this the clarity slider, can't find out what this actually does? It looks like a subtle shadow/highlight effect.

I might consider doing it using another method, using hue & saturation for example. Using a pre-existing method/filter/effect as the OP mentions could be considered an effects filter, and that's not allowed in Basic. I thought this came up once in a B/W challenge and a Duotone challenge, where it was mentioned that using converters/effects to alter from color wasn't legit.
From the Basic Rules: "No “effects” filters may be applied to your image, with the exception of Noise and Gaussian Blur."
It would be nice to hear from SC on this for clarification. |

If I understand the preset in LR correctly all they are doing is adjusting hue and saturation. They just found a settings that are used over and over again and saved them. However, I'm not sure that is all this one did, which is why I asked the question. It seems to me that I could get the same result by playing with the hue and saturation sliders. So if they tell me I can't, I guess I will have to do that instead of using the preset.

It's not an effects filter. It's a RAW conversion that does basically the same thing as Duotone in Photoshop (but with more control and in 16 bit mode).
There are no filters in LR.

Yes, you can look on the right and see exactly what values are manipulated with each preset. Nothing there that you can't do with photoshop and stay within the bounds of basic editing. There isn't even a gaussian blur feature to stress about. |
