I understand what you are saying, but I think it is pretty lousy. If anyone here (DPC) is that jaded then they should also eliminate private messages and posting of one's email and website addy as well. (so that no one directly contacts one another during a challenge)

It is the same thing, after all.

Wow. Paranoid much? First one of you accuses the SC of being paranoid about anyone having discussions outside DPC (as if stopping such is even possible) and then the other one buys it as face value and piles on.

The SC doesn't want to monitor all your communications (as if they even could). The Team Suck board has always been open to lurkers (SC or not) because that's how skewsme and posthumous set it up.

For the record, posthumous posted a firm no-friend-voting policy early on, and it gets copied into the first post in every TS thread. Read it yourself.

Sheesh.

If you share/discuss photographs before challenges with other suck members or anyone else for that matter you might want to state that you are not voting on the particular photograph(s) discussed.

Ok, before you go shooting off, we are not talking about a TS thread. We are talking about a separate message board that is not part of DPC.

Yes I have read the post about friendly voting, and I am sure that all TS'ers abide by it.

There were no accusations made at all. What was reffered to was the fact that there are certain DPC members that would somehow feel there was something shady going on, NOT the SC, and as a result the SC is allowed in to messageboard. (so no one can every accuse us of wrongdoing on our messageboard) And as for me, I just asked why the SC monitors something that is not part of DPC!

Please get your facts straight before you start making accusations.

Thanks.

Absolutely. :)

I was just asking about the TS messageboard in general.

Basssman, I know what we're discussing because I've been reading that board since its inception.

I thought you were asking why SC would have access because you asked "Why would SC have access to something that is outside of DPC?"

If you weren't talking about SC, I apologize.

Sorry, raish. I believe you. My reaction was based on comments that have been made by Team Suckers over time that most definitely were NOT jokes.

All this fuss over a board I haven't looked at for about a half a year. Is anyone using it? I highly doubt the SC is visiting it to check up on us. Hmm... friday.... check team suck day.... let's see, no activity since March... okay, see you next week! I bet it's ursula!

Good grief, no! That was exactly what I wanted, and with my monitor, knowing Taylor, and not even thinking about the possibility of the freckles looking like acne (On a 13 year old girl?????? Duh, Jeb!) I was pleased with the honesty.

While I am at it ... if you WANT me to be fussy ... just a TAD of mid range levels plus ?

Yes, that's exactly what I want. A copy of this was already given to mom, and both she and Taylor were THRILLED, so it's not an issue for anyone but us.

When you say mid range levels, you mean the mddle adjuster on the levels control? I don't use layers in CS2 (Fear & Ignorance!), I just use adjstments in the Image drop down.

Don, thanks for chiming in as well.

One thing......I'm still looking for a yeah or nay as to whether you think that there is potential for me to do portraiture on a low level professional basis.

I'm looking to do this strictly for friends and friends' referrals on a semi-casual, informal surroundings kind of basis.

I'm not interested in getting wrapped up in a whole lot of studio time and equipment. The shot of Taylor was done under adverse conditions and was a completely random opportunity.....I was shooting at 1000 ISO at the time, too. I just called her name from across two tables in this fire hall and shot her when she looked at me.

The Original:[thumb]603573[/thumb]

This is another from the same night that was even worse as far as raw material went........she was probably only 30% of the frame and the exposure was off, red-eye, bad composition. But I was able to adjust it and fish her out of it.

[thumb]602585[/thumb] The Original:[thumb]603575[/thumb]

These candids seem to be really popular with my daughter's friends and their parents, and sometimes I also get some wild stuff with PS effects that they like as well from an otherwise unremarkable shot.....fr'instance, they did this "Red Carpet Entrance" thing at this party (Hollywood theme) and I got this shot of Andie whom I thought just nailed it with the pose and attitude:
[thumb]603583[/thumb]

I just thought it'd be fun to see what I could do with this shot......I could tell just on the little screen on the back of the camera that this was going to be a good shot to play with for the "Hollywood" effect.

So.....do I have potential in y'all's opinions?

Or should I just stick to handing out the occasional candid to friends and not hire out?

I did not mean to be the starter of any controversy. My apologies to my TS teamates if it was taken that way.

Hi guys! Checking in from Aghanistan, where so far it's delightfully cool to the point of being cold (at least it is at midnight, which is when I got in local time.) No internet access at all in the living area; limited at work due to shared computers. I'll try to find an internet cafe of some kind. Just wanted to say hi, I'm fine, and I'll be scarce for awhile.

Godspeed, my friend, we'll be thinking of you.

P.S. Is it beige there, too?

Just to give you the two contradictory halves of the response:

a) don't give up your day job
b) if you don't ever try you'll never know

I think maybe the big question is whether you can get the same quality of candids shooting cold in a less snug environment (where you're an unknown geek with a camera instead of unca Jeb). My guess is you'll tackle that problem when you get to it. Get to it first. Good luck.

LOL!!! Thanks, Peter!

I wouldn't dream of quitting my day job for photography. I actually lived my version of the dream when I had my own sports car shop. For about twelve years it was fabulous! But dreams do come to an end, and I was offering a service that was rare......not too many people around who are both competent and willing to work on old British roadsters. And for whatever reason, I was very good at it.

Just from DPC alone, I realize that not only am I not unique, but that I'm far from the cream of the crop. I am planning to do this pretty much only for friends, and I am planning on offering my services on an approval basis.....you don't like the portraits, we part friends, or reshoot. We'll work out the details of pricing once we like what we have and decide on sizes, frames, and quantities. I weon't be doing anything more than putting some mostly finished images to disc, so my expenses will be minimal. As far as the time goes, since it'll be casual, I'm not too worried about it, and as these are people I see on a regualr basis, should it not work out, I won't have hard feelings about a sitting fee for a failed shoot.

As far as my time commitment to this, for a while 'til I truly figure out whether I have any future at it, I'll just consider it educational and informative, and as an opportunity to get my feet wet. If it takes off, I can always revise the setup.

I guess I really have thought about this subconsciously......I didn't realize how much 'til I laid this all out.

Thanks to you who took the time to reply! I appreciate it very much.

Peter, that's the most cogent, concise response to this frequent question I've ever seen.

Reminds me of this line from a favorite song: if you get the choice to sit it out or dance, I hope you dance. :)

This is the only part of what you said that made me nervous. The order can depend on what people like, but the pricing should be pretty much set in stone, i.e., this size has such-and-such a price, volume discount for such-and-such a number of prints... otherwise, you have all kinds of potential for accusations of preferential treatment, misunderstandings, etc. I also wonder if you should include frames at all unless you really enjoy that aspect. Otherwise, it's just another potential variable for them not to like. It's simpler to let them frame it themselves.

Keep in mind, this is coming from someone who has never sold a photograph in his life...

Sorry to break in, and I know I haven't been around much latetly, but I am hoping that someone will help. I have a good friend who is very depressed. He is still meeting his obligations for work and attending classes for his doctorate, but is not sleeping or eating. Most things in his life are not going well, and I fear he is close to the edge. I have no idea how to help him, so if anyone has ever helped or been helped, please send some advice. PM's welcome (but I won't have access to my email for about 2 hours.
