Ok, my wife has given me the thumbs up to go ahead and order a set of Alien Bees (specifically, the DigiBee package).

I'll have some learning to do, but it looks like this will work well for me when doing things like school portraits. I assume that the wireless trigger in this package is fully compatible with my Nikon D70s, right? It just slides onto the hot shoe, and does its thing, right? (The D70s doesn't have a place to plug in such stuff, which is why I'm asking.)

I've already pre-ordered a Nikon D300, so I would expect that everything is going to work just fine with it, too, on whatever mystery date they actually release the camera.

My reason for posting this is just to be sure I'm not overlooking something dumb, and that this is all going to work just fine for me. I'll appreciate any advice if for some reason this isn't going to work well with my camera, and camera-to-be :)

yes!

and you don't even need the wireless trigger (although i just got one and love it). you can trip the strobes with your onboard flash or your SB-800 or whatever.

i predict you will be loving life. :)

Cool. I hope to be loving life! When I find out the exact release date of the D300, I'll be sitting at the bottom of my hill, waiting for the Big Brown Truck to make its ascent every day. He'll get sick of seeing me until it arrives.

I've been doing the school stuff with a rather home-cooked method, and I want to take it a bit more seriously. I have a SB-800 flash (which I love), and an older Nikon flash (SB-50DX) that I had been putting on umbrellas (which I personally spray-painted silver).

That has more or less worked out ok, but I really want something that's meant to do the job here, rather than various crap I picked up at Home Depot. Not to mention that the SB-50DX decided to stop working today, which means I'd have to use an even older unit with even more home-cooked whackyness on my next job.

Wow, and I thought I was cheap...lol.. seriously, I'm impressed :-D

As far as your OP goes... looks like you are good to go. Only thing I recommend is a decent flash meter, if you want to start understanding ratios and such.

Alan,

there is a digibee package listed on ebay. I just saw it. I got mine through ebay, and Alien Bee will honor the warranty if the seller gives you the receipt.

Too late... already pushed the magical "buy" button! :)

Thanks for the heads-up, though.

has anyone tried the UPS Worldwide Saver to Canada* from AlienBee??

Over the summer I used the digibee packet with the nikon d70 and they had to have a hot shoe adaptor to have a place to plug in the pc chord, but it would never stay and gave me hell. Since the package comes with the wireless setup which I now own, you will be fine seeing as it is compatible with your hot shoe. congrats on your kit!

I ordered a couple of light mods and a medium stand earlier this month and shipping was $19.76US (cheaper in Canadian dollars now, woo-hoo!). Can't remember if I had a choice of shipping options.

Now you have to go through the hardest part. Waiting for the Big Brown Truck. It is agony. But you are going to enjoy the lights.

Yeah, I tried using a really high-pitched whining, so it was becoming unbearable for her :)

Ahhhh yes, the high pitch whine is quite effective.

lol. I just buy stuff and in turn, I listen to the high pitch whine. I have trained my ears to tune that frequency out completely. So unless something comes flying at me from across the room. I am totally wife proof when it comes to getting the gear I want.
