A few months ago I brought up the idea of a Pennsylvania Get Together and a few of you were interested. Here is an update on it. Railfest is October 4th and 5th and we are tentatively planning to take the Sunday Morning train ride at 10:20am.

Anyone who needs tickets to Railfest, you can order them at //www.railroadcity.com/Railfest.htm

Railfest is a really fantastic photo taking opportunity of the Alleghney Mountains with the beautiful oranges and golds of the season.

So who is planning to come?

I would say it's approximately 4 hours from the DC area.

Lionel, I'm the one in Altoona and it takes me about 3 hours to get to DC, and it is about 180 miles. From DC you take I270N to Hagerstown then take I70 to Breezewood, then 30West to Bedford then I99North, and that brings you right into Altoona.

Damn, I'd love to be there! I grew up in the alleghney mts, Armstrong Cty. My Parents now live near Greensburg., and I went to school at Penn State Mont Alto. Too bad I'mm going to an Oyster Festival in Chincoteague VA the NEXT weekend. Oh well I'll show you some photographs from VA if you share yours!

Ah -- see, I was factoring in stopping at every rest stop to take a whiz, as is my tradition... :P

LOL I do that too but DC is still only a 3 hour drive. Factoring in that the speed limit the whole way is 65, and add an addition 15mph for driving with the flow. Can manage at least 3 pitstops and still only make it a 3 hour drive...and hey how about breakfast in Altoona? I know of a few really cool resturants downtown near the museum just got to decide if you want a 50's style diner, a locally owned waffle resturant or the McDonalds next door to the museum...Mickey D's will be the fastest, the waffle place has a working lionel train, and the 50s diner has a very friendly oldtime atmosphere. Or we can go to Sheetz get S'muffins and Sheetz coffee and eat on the train...

Oh and in the Mall next to the museum there is going to be a toy train display and lots of toy train accessories for sale.

Actually it is my fav or the 3 too, I will have to dig up the photos I have of the place and post them. When you walk in it, it is like time has stood still for the last 50 years. They have the really good old fashion "greasy spoon" food. Oh and the burgers are freshly made at lunchtime...oh yeah btw I am addicted to that place like I am to DPC.

Hope you can come...and I wasn't even thought of in the 50s either =o)

Terry not sure the exact distance to the New Jersey line but if it gives you an idea it is 225 miles to Philly. And I can drive it in 4 hours with 2 stops. Friend recently went to Atlantic City in just over 5 hours.

Ah...sounds a little far for me. I was hoping for a get together closer to New Hope or Phili....
That would be a more accessible location for the different states. Maybe the next one will be.

Terry, I just was about to order my tickets for Railfest when I realized you can board the train in Philly and get round trip excursion tickets from Philly. They offer that cause they are bringing up commuter coaches from Baltimore for the weekend.

I forgot to reply to that email, and forgot about the railfest get together until reading this post. I'd like to come but unfortunately I work that weekend. I might be able to get off, but I'm not sure yet. You folks are doing the Sunday thing only, right?

So the train ride is from 10:20am to ?

Yes we are planning to go on the train excursion on Sunday morning at 10:20am. However I will be doing Railfest both days and if anyone can make both days or just one of the days you are more than welcome to join me. Let me know if you are coming on Saturday and we can make some plans.

I was at the museum today and found out that tickets are selling fast. One of the excursions for Saturday is already sold out so anyone wanting to join us on the Sunday morning venture should try to order tickets this week sometime. One good thing is the Sunday morning trip is usually the least crowded so that might help us.

So we book on the sunday trip correct ?

I will be there, will probably leave Reston early, around 5AM, to be there for breakfast. I am almost 100% sure I will be able to be there

Lionel if you know for sure you are coming you will need to go to the site and order your ticket for the 10:20am excursion on Sunday. If you aren't sure you can hope that the tickets aren't sold out for the morning trip and get your ticket when you get here.

There might be a slight change on the breakfast though. I forgot that we have to be at the train station by 9:30 so we may need to opt for McDonalds prior to the trip then have lunch at the diner when we get back.
