| I guess that I've had my xti for a year and the warranty is up for renewal. Is it worth the $165 a year? Anyone out there had problems? |

| I would not do it...put that money aside and save up for a new lens. |

They push these warranties because they are HUGE profit-makers. This means that the group of owners who buy and maintain extended warranties spend more (much more) per capita maintaining/repairing their cameras than those who do not. But it's like any insurance; the stuff is a lot more valuable if and when you need it.
Still, I've never had an extended warranty on camera gear, and I've never wished I did. The only way I'd recommend you get it is if you can easily afford it right now, but might NOT be able to afford repairs down the road. If you're a student, say, with an extra $150 now, but in 3 months who knows?
For the most part, self-insuring is more cost effective in the long run, on all but really major things like houses.
Look at it this way: you could buy and maintain extended warranties on your TV, your computer, your stereo system, your camera gear (body and lenses), your refrigerator, your air conditioner, and so forth and so on, and pay a huge amount yearly to do this — but what are the odds that you'll ever have to spend more than that yearly amount, each and every year, in repairs? And any amount you DON'T get back in repairs (in the happy and usual event that everything keeps working) Keeps getting added to the pot, year after year, of how much you've invested in insurance on consumer goods.

if you use your camera like I use my camera, you'll probably eventually break it through use and that's probably not covered through warranty anyway.
That being said, I beat the heck out of my 350, taking it hiking, out on the rain, hanging from the strap with a big L lens while climbing over rocks... still works great, no issues! |

My 350d broke after 13 months but got it fixed under warrenty as i said the problem started before it expired. The repair would have cost me £155 or $310.
If i were you i would sell it and use the money for an upgrade.
I upgraded to a nikon ;) |
