Yep... I signed up when I got my drivers license when I turned 16, as far as I know everyone in my family are organ donors.

I never figured it was a big deal, its not like I need them after I die.

I have a question that someone might know the answer to.

When I was 9 years old I had a form of hepatitis... Hep A is what it is known as today... back then they just called it jaundiced.

I heard that I am not allowed to donate blood/organs or tissue.

I checked the Red Cross Web site.

Here's what it says:

Hepatitis, Jaundice
If you had hepatitis (inflammation of the liver) caused by a virus, or unexplained jaundice (yellow discoloration of the skin), since age 11, you are not eligible to donate blood. This includes those who had hepatitis with Cytomegalovirus (CMV), or Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV), the virus that causes Mononucleosis.

Acceptable if you had jaundice or hepatitis caused by something other than a viral infection, for example: medications, Gilbert's disease, bile duct obstruction, alcohol, gallstones or trauma to the liver. If you ever tested positive for hepatitis B or hepatitis C , at any age, you are not eligible to donate, even if you were never sick or jaundiced from the infection.

Sounds like you're eligible. If you're still concerned, and you're in the US, just call and ask: 800-GIVE-LIFE. Outside the US, check the site for how to ask questions.

I also know that if you were jaundiced as a newborn (that is, not from hepatitis), you're fine. My parents tell me I was a lovely dusky rose color for several days.

I keep a Smith & Wesson by the front entry, so I guess I am a "Door Gun Owner" as well. :-P

Funny thing, I signed up for the organ donor thing when I first got my driver's license. My mother told me about the whole 'doctors might be a bit sloppy' stuff... I don't think that they make as much money from specific procedures like this in Canada, so I suspect it's less of an issue. Of course I don't live there anymore and my TW driver's license doesn't have anything like that.

On the other hand, I've heard that the sale/trade of blood is pretty business with some pretty hefty costs associated with just a pint. Considering the state of medicine/insurance/costs in America, I'd have trouble swallowing the fact that they couldn't come up with 80 bucks for a tissue test. Perhaps it's because it is marrow and not blood.

Interestingly, the medical program here in TW blows the medical program in Canada and America out of the water. You don't wait three years for anything. Might have something to do with poorly enforced and obeyed traffic laws, a proliferation of motor scooters, a general dislike of wearing helmets by many outside of the larger cities and the fact that if your car hits someone and they live, you get in more trouble than if they die...

When I first came here, I think there were about eight people that warned me that if I ever got hit by a car - GET OFF THE ROAD because they might well come back to finish the job. Sadly, this sort of thing shows up in the papers every few months. (less and less thankfully) Watching the news is not for the faint of heart.

I was also told that while here in TW, I WOULD see a dead person lying on the road somewhere at some point. I was originally coming only for two months. Five years later, I'd say that was an exaggeration. But it wasn't wrong.
