You shoud hear nothing while focusing, and a slight click and soft buzzing sound when IS enables. That's it.

NOT normal to hear something loose inside while shaking it. For the same price you could get a 70-200 f/2.8 non-IS. I'd get that if I were you.

It should sound tight as a drum, EXCEPT that sometimes the lens shades rattle on Canon lenses. I doubt that's what you're describing, though...

If you're shaking it with the lens cap OFF, definitely not.

If it was my gear, and it still produced good images, I wouldn't care what kind of noise it made when I shook it.
BUT, I would probably avoid buying a lens if it sounded like something was loose inside. Unless it was a few hundred bucks under the standard price so that I could use the difference to get it fixed if need be, and even then it's a lot of hassle... |

If it a 70-200 F4 IS, then, unless he bought it as soon as it came out, then it should still be in warranty becuase as far as I remember it came out about a year ago? The only reason I remember is because I got one when it first hit the shops and that was towards the end of last year. (got rid of it pretty sharpish though and chopped it in for the 2.8 IS) |

My 100-400 IS lens makes a slight whirring sound when you press the shutter button halfway. I assume it is gyro's inside spinning up. Occasionally you feel a slight bump come from the lens when in operation when the moving lens element reaches the end of its travel. This seems like normal operation to me. I haven't shaken the lens to find out if you can make the moving lens element rattle.
