my camera/lens fell on the ground and the filter broke. the broken glass on the filter scratched the frontal glass of my lens. does that affect the picture quality? will the scratch marks show on the photos? i haven't taken any pics with it since the accident. does canon covers the repair? thanks in advance for your responses!

I would check and see if your homeowners/renters insurance would cover it. I know mine does. I also carry a professional photographers insurance policy, and that costs be barely anything, and covers me for EVERYTHING. Definately something worth looking into. As far as effecting your picture, I think its just something you are going to have to shoot with and find out. It probably really depends on the severity.

Most likely, you probably won't notice it if you're shooting at a wide aperture (2.8, etc.). The most likely time you'll see evidence of it in a shot is at smaller f-stops. Of course it depends on how badly it was scratched...

My husband was bucked off a horse and he happened to have my camera with him when it happened and it took a tiny chip out of my 28-135mm lens. (Thankfully the camera was the only thing injured! My husband survived just fine!) I thought for sure the lens was ruined, but I still use it all the time and I can't see the chip in the pictures.

Unless the scratches are *really big* the only thing you might notice is a slight loss of contrast.

Stupid question, did you try taking some shots to see if the scratches show up?

P.S.

i read once that you could take a corner of one of those sticky notes and put it on the front of the lens ( like pencil eraser size ). supposedly you won't see it in the photo. haven't tried myself though...
