I was working on the Freedom challenge when I came across this veteran describing where he had fought. It wasn't obvious that he was at a veteran's memorial, so I entered something more obvious. Not a great photo, but I through maybe there was enough to share...

I posted this at 2:15 AM CST, so bumping once to see if I can get some input. I think the reflections had some potential... |

I think if only one person was in the shot would have looked nicer.
It looks good, but the reflections to me are a bit much with 3 people there

Thanks for the feedback. I think this is one of those shots where I am stuck on what it could have been rather than on the final result. The one time it was down to just two people, I ended up with a slight focus issue and could not salvage the shot. I stood quietly for about 15 minutes while they talked, but it just never came together as I had hoped.
On the focus issue, I am finding that my biggest problem with the 10D is getting used to the autofocus. This could be because my coolpix cameras had so much depth of field that it covered up a skill problem or the autofocus field on the canon is big and it's difficult to the focus to lock where I want it to.

I liked the reflections. They were the first thing that jumped out at me. And even (or maybe especially) with the two ladies - it gave it an alternating, back and forth quality that appealed to me. Focus even seems a little soft on this one, or maybe its just a bit grainy, which isn't too bad, but noticable. How much was this cropped from the original? The framing and composition are excellent. I love the line of the top of the memorial. As far as meeting the challenge, I think it was good enough, though maybe not exceptional (i.e. it doesn't really jump out and make you say "yes, that's freedom!"). I'd have given it a 6 or maybe a 7. |

Thanks for the input. I think this is another reason why I should be focused on lessons learned rather what the image could have been.
I cropped to change the aspect ratio and remove a distraction from the far right side of the image, but given the size of the image I had to work with, this should not have caused a problem.
I think there are two possible causes of the soft focus.
1) I used the center focus area to capture focus on the older gentlemen's face and the reframed. It's hard to be sure, but when I look at the image it appears that the focus is about two feet in front of the subject. Either I slipped of the shutter button and refocused or I simply missed the focus in the first place.
2) The lens was zoomed out to about 85mm (x1.6 = 136), so using the 1/focal length rule suggests I should have a shutter speed of at least 1/125. I let the shutter speed slip to 1/90 for this shot and the wind was shaking me, so I probably picked up some motion blur. I should have used manual mode to lock the exposure where I wanted it.
