I am importing wedding photos into lightroom, and the order the photos are in changes as they import. The first fifty or sixty photos are spread out into the entire library. Does anyone have an explination for this?

As far as I know, Lightroom orders the images by name. Has the name changed mid sequence? Perhaps rolling over past IMG_9999?

Ah, wait... started up LR now. In Library view mode, there is a "Sort Order" with various possible sorting sequences: Import order, capture time, Edit Time, Edit Count and several others. Perhaps you need to adjust that to match your desired sort sequence.

Ok I found the answer on the adobe site here it is for future reference.

To sort your files by filename, do View -> Sort -> Filename.

Lightroom sorts images by creation time. The pictures appear out of order to you because of the way your camera buffers files. If you look at the creation time of the images, it isn't the time the shutter is pressed, it's the time the image is verified on the compact flash card. Which isn't always in chronological order

They all do it, it's a feature. Import them, sort them and then organise them.

Just a tip from one who uses multiple cameras (either on my own, carrying multiple cameras, or because I have an assistant helping me):

I always use ACDSee to sort my images in Modified Date order first, and then (again, using ACDSee) I rename all of my images to IMG_#### starting at IMG_0001.

This allows multiple cameras to shoot the same scene and to have the images interleave in a proper sequence. Then in Lightroom I am processing the images in filename order. And, as well, they are displayed on my website in filename order.

Of course, the key to making this work is that I synchronize the clocks on my cameras before each shoot. :-)
