Excuse me if this has been settled previously (we need a text search capability for forums with a link on the Community / Forums page), but I'm wondering what would be a reasonable fee to charge a publisher who wishes to use one of my photos in a book. Small publisher, probably a small number of prints (5000+) ?
Please state whether your estimate is in $USA or $Cdn
Thanks !
(Sorry - should have placed this in Q&A)

The short answer is; it depends.
The long answer is that it depends on several things. For example where in the book will the shot be used? How big will the shot be ? (a cover shot on a large book vs. a small image in the middle of a chapter) How many copies will be made? Will you be credited in the book? (and where will the credit appear, next to the image, buried in the index or not at all?) and, above all, what does it mean to you to see your work printed. Will you be able to include this in your portfolio? etc.

Hi...
Here's how I does it..
When negotiating with the publisher, you should already have a rough feel of their available budget. Keep in mind that they're not going to pay alot as they're only going for a run of 5,000 and the production cost of a book usually cost around USD5.
With the other overheads like logistics and handling charges, it'll work up to be around USD6 to USD7 a book. The sales price should be around USD9 to USD11.
Having all that you should then evaluate how "important" you image is to the book. Give it a factor about 5%. Take 5% of the projected profit of (USD3 *5000). That'll give about USD750 for use in 5000 copies of books.
If you're not relying on selling stock photographs for a living, you can try this for a really sweet deal. You can quote the publisher the following:
- USD800 for 5000 copies
- USD1,200 for 10000 copies
- and USD2,500 for full rights to the photo (This would mean you'll not be able to use the photo for anything else)
Cheers
Good luck with the deal..

Ah -- thanks for the replies. The photo will be on one of the pages in the middle of the book, I suppose, as it is associated with a chapter of text (not written by me). -- (photo is taking up more than 1/2 of page)
They have offered me 2 free books plus the photo being credited (doesn't say where). I was hoping for at least around $300 or $400 Cdn. plus 2 free copies of the book.
Is there a usual amount (e.g. standard fee) paid for photos from freelance photographers?
I haven't found anything for books and only the following for magazines:
- a photograph at 1/4 page in Business Week pays $450 per 1/4 page
- National Geographic pays $150 for 1/2 page

I don't think there's a standard rate or something.. like art.. the value is not fixed and can't be benchmarked.
300 to 400 sounds alright.. Guess.. you'll have to play by ear and see how much you can get away with.
Cheers
