Well, I've been on a forced leave of absence. (Don't create multiple accounts, the DPC powers don't like it.)
Before I got back from my leave, I took my kids to the park with our jogging stroller. Like always, I wanted to bring my camera, so I put it in one of the big side pockets.
When I got to the park, I pulled out my 10D to take some snaps. To my surprise, like a coffee cup turned over on it's side, water came dripping out.
OH F*&K!!! That ain't right. Apparently, we left the jogging stroller out overnight and it rained. Apparently, the large pocket is waterproof, so no water can get in and water can't also get out.
Luckily, I didn't power it on. I took out the batteries (even the clock battery) and brought it home to dry. I read somewhere you should put it in a container with rice. The rice will soak up the water.
After a week, I powered it back on. Nothing, not even a noise.
My wife then asked me if the lens (17-40f4) was okay. Crap! I forgot about my lens (the most expensive lens I own). I still have my elan7e, so I tried it out on my film body and it worked. Yeah!
To summarize:
1. Waterproof works both ways. Keeps out and keeps in the water.
2. Digital and water don't mix.
3. If they do happen to mix, remove ASAP and don't turn on.
4. Using rice to help absorb the water helps (of course, I don't really know if this works, but it worked for others).
5. If worse comes to worse, there's always ebay for a replacement.
BTW, I've upgraded to a used 20D. I really thought about the 40D, but for that much money, I can get a really good lens. I'm still holding out for the sub $1,000k full framed camera that Canon is keeping in it's marketing closet. |

Why would you have done that? |

I was trying to be funny. I was watching Beavis and Butthead. That inspired me to create an account for Beavis and Butthead. The name wasn't taken. Then I could comments on pictures and reply to thread in a "Beavis and Butthead" fashion and hope people got it.
Apparently, other people didn't like the humor. Sorry people.
I could also take "Beavis and Butthead" style shots for competition which surely take the brown ribbon, but I got caught.
I'm not certain how I got caught. Maybe they track IP address since I don't think they can track a MAC address.
Of course, it would've been easy to track. I new user, making obsurd comments and all. They caught me with in a 24hour period.
Maybe I used up my DPC karma and my camera got trashed. Or maybe it was a conspiracy. (be afraid people) |

Hmm...because it has been corrupted by a foreign substance that happens to be sensitive to heat before it will conduct electrical impulses...like foam perhaps? :) Just a thought. |

That much heat may be expanding a connection to complete a circuit there by causing it to work. This problem may have been exasperated by the foam or it could just be a coincidence and there was a weak connection to begin with. No clue what foam and circuitry does...just guessing...

<============Got a 20D now. Now instead of 3 camera versions behind, I'm only 2 versions behind.
Bought it off ebay and it just arrived. Wow, it's snappy and the FPS rate is better. I also dig the RAW+JPEG.
Now to shoot for some challenges. And don't worry about entering the monthly free study. It's a waist of time, because I'm going to win it with my 20D. |
