Don't worry big guy, its not government financial aid, its a student loan.
But even so - youre tax money is going to pay for peoples rent, transportation, school books and supplies, food, etc. You can use financial aid for anything and everything now a days. |
Is it a private student loan?
If it's a Federal student loan, even though you will eventually pay it back, the interest is subsidized (paid) by the Fed government. Not to mention that the interest you'll pay to the government is a LOT less than what the government could get by loaning those same dollars to someone else. |
Privatized through Sallie Mae I believe. The government didnt want to pay for me to go to school twice haha. |
Sallie Mae simply manages the loan programs. If you have a Stafford loan, (the most common UG student loan), it's a government loan. SM does offer private loans, but only for those who don't qualify for or receive enough Federal aid for their school.
Why wouldn't the goverment want to pay for you to go back to school? You're not eligible for grants, but simply having a previous degree doesn't disqualify you for government loans. I know because I got federal loans to pay for my 2nd degree.
Anyway, have fun. I bought a nice 4x5 camera with my loan money one year.

Okay so thats a real cheap way to get some image views, but it is interesting an image with 50 views picks up 6 more in 8 minutes. Wonder what a psychologist would say about that.
Anyway to add something productive to this. I agree if you're looking for lighting I'd go for an alienbees setup. I don't own one, but have a friend who allows me to borrow her for some of my freelance real estate shoots and I have come to love them. In fact maybe next time I won't be so fast to give them back......

I really didn't mean to hijack this thread, or shove it off course.
Just trying to be funny. I really do find it interesting that I posted this image three months ago and it had picked up 50 views, then just by suggesting it might be offensive it picks up 30 views in less than 4 hours.
Now...back to your scheduled thread.

| Go for the lights. I just dropped a bunch of borrowed money into an SB-600 and an SB-800 to get away from my ancient scorching tungstens. And I love 'em. Now I just need that new lens... |

Hi, I work in financial aid at an art school - If you were using this money to buy a car or a new stereo, say, it wouldn't be allowable. However, if you are majoring in photography, it would certainly be an allowable school school expense. Its effectively the same thing as buying books or other school supplies. |

If I was majoring in biology, would prostitutes be an allowable expense?

Many of the places now let you take out student loans to cover living expenses, such as rent, food, room and board, etc.
Plus the school is the one sending me the check, so im assuming that they know whats allowable and whats not. I mean they already sent me a check for $25 because my tuition was 4225 and I get $4250 per semester financial aid. |

Living expenses have always been allowable.
Items related to your hobby are not.
Just because they're sending you a check, doesn't mean that anything you might purchase is allowable. |

Providing his major is indeed in photography (where it would be considered an expense) :) Okay...sorry for the off topic jump! :)

Correct, but in his situation, the loan is not simply related to a hobby - its related to his course of study!
If he were a guitar performance major, he could buy a guitar with it. Conversely, if guitar was just a hobby of his, the purchase would not be allowable.

Yes, I don't disagree.
As I mentioned below, when I was studying photography, I used some part of my fin aid to buy a very nice 4x5 view camera setup. |

Me too - well, not the townie crack whores...but this is my second time in school. Have my BFA in Computer Graphics and going for my Cert in Multimedia Tech. Only my school doesn't remiburse the money. They hold it over to pay for next term.
And I love how at $12.50/hr., and paying rent at $1250/mo., the governement thinks I earn too much to receive a grant. I second whoever said WTF?
But I just got a promotion and am making double, so HA!
Stephanie
who STILL can't afford a new lense cause they just raised her flippin rent!
