I screwed up something with my class schedule which resulted in me getting a refund of $850 worth of financial aid. They are going to send me a check for it, so essentially its a low interest loan thats not due for 4 years. What should I get?!
I cant decide if I want to drop it all (plus some) on studio lights (so Ill have my own kit instead of my moms) or on a large telephoto lens for sports photog. |

Why do you have to buy anything? It sounds like you've got this $850 burning a hole in your pocket and you just have to find something to spend it on.
Just put it in the bank for a while and think about it, instead of impulse buying. |

If you buy studio lights, can you maybe make a return on your investment? How about with the zoom lens.. I know not everyone is out to make a quick buck out of their photography, but if you are looking at earning some cash decide which one will be most valuable to at this moment in time.
IMO, go for the lights, you can practice with them indoors/outdoors and throughout the winter months.
edit - just seen your mum has some you can use. well its really upto you at this point, or do what is suggested below and stick it in a savings account until you really need to buy something.

So you will have to pay it back within 4 years? Just pay it back now.

Sike, im only playing, I love crack, whores, crack whores, and booger sugar too.
The reason Im not just dropping it back into pay my loans off is because this is money I had expected to spend on school anyway, and these are purchases I expected to make eventually as well. I think I might go for studio lights with a portable power system so I can start playing outside.

| Try to decide what you anticipate shooting more of in the near future, and let that help you decide. BUT, with $850, your money will go further with lights as opposed to a nice sports lens, which you'd have to add some considerable cash to what you already have to get a decent one. I say get the lights. Happy shopping. |

I see what you guys are saying, but its also not like im broke and got tihs $850 and its all my money. I have a well paying job, I have more then enough money to pay my bills, etc. Its not like im a junkie spending my last $5 for a rock.
Also, this is what im giong to school for, so I could eventually open my own photography company (or take over the family photography company) so this would be an investment, and also allow me to spend money now, at a lower rate and a deferred payback schedule, instead of buying it 2 years from now - with cash out of my savings or on a credit card where ill have to start paying it back right away. |

Don't worry big guy, its not government financial aid, its a student loan.
But even so - youre tax money is going to pay for peoples rent, transportation, school books and supplies, food, etc. You can use financial aid for anything and everything now a days. |

In that case I second the idea of whores and drugs. You only go to college once. |

Not in my case, this is my 2nd time around, already got the degree in business and finance.
And I had my fair share of townie crack whores the first time, so now its time to buckle down and see if studying actually does help. |

Is it a private student loan?
If it's a Federal student loan, even though you will eventually pay it back, the interest is subsidized (paid) by the Fed government. Not to mention that the interest you'll pay to the government is a LOT less than what the government could get by loaning those same dollars to someone else.

Yeah, I've heard good things about them.
When it comes to lighting, is it usually jsut safe to stick with White Lightning and Alien Bees? |
