I got an email from Avanti Press today, as the buyer for Avanti Press was updating files and was verifying my contact info. I had no idea that the image they have a 5 yr contract with me on usage won an award. This is what she wrote:
"I don't know if you are aware that the card we published using your photo of two pugs embracing (we discreetly added underwear in Photoshop to save the pugs any embarrassment about their nudity, of course) won a Louie Award for 2006. The Louie Awards are the annual greeting card association awards for excellence........the card won in the 'Romance- $3.25 and under category'. Just wanted to let you know how great
that shot was and how much people love it. I can't wait to see more
charming shots of your pugs. They're superstars! "
For those of you who are not familiar with the image, here is the original version (before Avanti edited it), and the version they put out on greeting cards and stationary.

Thanks guys. Amazing how a 5 minute shot I did last minute for a challenge turned out to be such a success. I wish I could do that with more of my shots. |

Well, in that same email, the buyer did ask me if I had a website and if so could she have the link. Maybe she'll like another of my pugs mugs. :D |

Way to go, Linda! Will they let you use the "Louie Award Winner" in your self promotion?

That's terrific Linda! On a note of levity, I think it is WEIRD the way they edited the shot. Not so much the underwear (it's kind of cuter and more anthropomorphic with it), but the changing of the foreground fabric, the removal of the rose petals, etc. Weird...
:-)

HUGE congrats, Linda!! That is bitchin'waycool, as the kids in California used to say years ago. Another plus for you - I sent your pug portfolio link from here to a friend of mine, also down here in the desert, who's very much missing his pugs. It REALLY made his day to see all your pug pictures! So he sends his thanks as well. |

I have a contract with them for 5 yrs. - they get exclusive rights so I really cannot promote the image at this time. After the 5 yr contract is up, unless they ask to renew the contract, I will be inquiring if I can use the Louie as a promotion.

I agree Robert. I have never cared for the edited version - not the undies, not the yellow cast they gave it, and not the cropping out the rose petals. But hey - they paid me $2500 for 5 yrs so I guess if that's what they want they can do it.

You can definitely use the Louie on your promotional material, verbally. What you can't do (maybe, ask them) is reproduce the image itself. Nothing wrong with saying on your website "One of our images was used on a Louie-award-winning card for 2007" or whatever.
