Holy Crap. Kudos Nikon on finally taking the huge step forward that Nikonians like me had been asked for.
Images are here. |

I'm amazed at the low noise levels even at those psychotically high ISO's.
I'll need to start saving up. |

| Pretty darn impressive, with someone else finally offering competition to Canon in terms of full frame cameras I hope this means canon will stp up with some new stuff and lower prices. |

Note that those are D300 samples, not D3. Those are actually the first D300 samples I've seen, and for an APS-C sized sensor, they look great! |

I got to be honest with you, those D300 images at 3200 and 6400 arent that impressive. I sure hope the D3 is better then that.

I saw 2 photos that was on the other link, quite honestly it looks good for ISO 6400, however it also looks like it could have been done at a lower ISO meaning they gave it the best possible chance of being a well exposed photo. I want to see real world images to make an honest opinion of the ISO noise levels, both of those shots were done with added light(according to the text attached there are several diffused lights added) in the real world when using ISO 6400 its because you cant add light, you are using available and usually crappy lighting.

Not to say it doesn't look good, but....
A) Recall it's JPG, so noise reduction has been applied.
B) I don't think it's any accident that the ISO 6400 shot was done at an ice rink. We all know noise lurks in the shadows, not in the highlights.
I'm not quite sure I was following all Ken's yammering about how Canon couldn't get this shot (the hockey one) though because there isn't anything wide enough. ?!?

Apparently he doesnt consider the 5D, or the 1DsMKII or upcoming 1DsMKIII with the 14mm canon(either version) to be the same width as 14mm on the Nikon. Just remember to consider the source when you look at stuff with his name attached to it.

D3 does football
The badly toasted pixel in the center of the sensor is pretty annoying, especially when it starts shooting lasers out. But, theres a sample of a badly underexposed shot with subsequent levels adjustment at ISO 3200...

There is plenty of shadow in the 6400 shot here. As well as in the link option posted. |

As far as I understand he does not have the D3 yet, but is simply reposting official Nikon samples and blah blah's a lot about experiences he has with the Nikon brochures on the toilet....

If you haven't had any real world experience with the camera and its abilities, what's the point of "arguing" anything.
And why are the Canon users posting more about it then the Nikon users. Why do you care what Nikon comes out with? I could care less with what Canon has or is doing (unless Nikon totally folds).
Sander, brochures on the toilet....I LOVE IT! Probably twhat he does. "Hmmmm...I like that image at 1600." POOOOOTT. "Yeah, what about 3200." PHOOOOOT-Poot-PHOOOOT. "Awwww, that one burned! Musta been the jalepenos." BLAAAAATTTTTT-SPLAAAAT. "OUUUUUCCCHHHH!"

Because some of us are a lot more impressed by what Nikon is promising that what Canon has done. |

For the D300, I'm disappointed in those higher ISO results. The 1600 photos are good but the 3200 is noisier than I expected (I know I have unrealistic expectations). The 6400 photos are way too noisy.
The D3 results on the otherhand are beautiful.

So, it looks like the following DPC folks have the D3:
grigrigirl, Morgan, Dr.Confuser, commendatori, breadfan35, TheToby, TacTZilla, gorant71, wowlookbuy
...but none have entered any challenges yet--unless their entries are currently in the voting stage.
Let's see some photos!! :-)
