Hi,

I am a new dSLR user, just got a Pentax k100d, my reasons for going for it were

1. I really don't need higher MP's since my prints would be limited to the 8"x12" size, i suppose most pics would remain in the hard drive :-)
2. Affordability - I have limited experience in photography, so it didn't really make sense in sinking big bucks before knowing whether i would be upto the challenges posed by a sLR camera
3. Mix of auto and manual functions - Gives me an opportunity to learn and grow
4. Decent performance in low lights - I like to trek in the mountains, and being able to take pics of the landscape around in a SLR was one of the prime motivations

Now, i need to decide which lens to go for a second lens as the kit lens is of limited use, especially zoom etc

Typically the two choice seems to be :

a) Tamron/Sigma 70-300 mm
b) Sigma 55-250 mm

I can't at this point go for the Pentax 50-200 mm due to its cost.

I would be really grateful if folks on the forum could give their advice based on their prior experience.

Many thanks

soumendra

I am sure you know this already, but if you put the lens description terms in to Google (or whatever) you can pull up several reviews on it.
Personally, I have no experience with those 2 lenses, but good luck in your search :)

I have just purchased the Tamron 70-300 and even though it is quite new and I am still playing with it, I like it. It was a good price as I am not professional and couldn't justify too much for one lens. I want to get another couple of lenses as well soon. I am happy with the results so far. My lens in f4 so I take shots mainly in good light which is fine with me as this is the majority of my shots at the moment anyway. I will edit to add a shot in a moment.

That shot looks good indeed, how big is the lens(lengthwise), have you faced any issues in carrying it etc, because some reviews called it heavy so wanted to know, trouble is both are of the same costs so its naturally tempting to go for the 70-300 mm, unless the 55-200 is a really good performed at the extremes of the range.

BTW, if there are any other not expensive lenses that would work well with the k100d, please share the info

You mentioned the kit lens, but didn't say what focal length or zoom it has.
The lens choices are a personal thing, as only you know how you are wanting to shoot, and what subjects. If you can cover from about 18 to 300 mm, you will be able to get most of the shots that you can hand hold.

Its the standard 18-55 mm kit lens that comes with the camera

I just bought a 28-300 Tamron lens that is rapidly on its way to becoming the only lens I use.

I bought a 17-85mm when I purchased my camera, which I find really good. The 70-300 is about 1/2 as long again. Of course its bigger and heavier but I dont really dont find it a problem. In saying this I haven't had to carry it any great distances when it is mounted to the camera.

The Pentax DA 50-200 is only 200 bucks... what exactly is your budget??
