Hello dudes and dudesses'
I have a sony dv cam...the kind with the dv tape. I had an xp machine that would capture the video with no problems.
I now have vista and when i plug in...the computer recognizes a "device" but can find drivers.
I can capture video b/c Premiere doesn't think anything is attached.
I have a generic intel video card.
Sony is no help. Does anyone know what I have to do to start this up?
Thanks,
Kenny

Have you checked with sony to see if they have vista compatable drivers for your cam? If not, I'm not sure if it will work. You can always get a USB capture device, but you will lose the ability to write back to tape. |

Are you connecting via USB or Firewire?

Here's one such device that appears to work with Vista.
Basically, it's a box that connects to your computer via USB, and to your camera via RCA A/V cables (like connecting your camera to a TV). Software on your computer then encodes the video to a standard format (usually MPEG 1 or 2, but sometimes DIVX).
I know there are many such devices that work very well with XP, but Vista support is becoming available.

Ken, I plugged mine into the Firewire port and Vista recognized it and immediately installed the driver and prompted to import video.
I was pretty sure no external drivers were gonna be needed, as windows should support it. And it did.

After you connect it, go into Device Manager and see hf any devices are misconfigured.

I had a terrible time trying to connect my Sony DV via USB in XP. I gave up in the end and got a firewire card for the PC and connected using a firewire cable as well (which gives better quality than the USB connection, for some reason)
I suspect Sony support the firewire drivers better than the USB ones. |

I'd try the USB out, but I have no clue where that cord is.

Thanks fotoman....
I did have a firewire wire around here somewhere...I'll try it when I find it.
I'll try your suggestion below also.

Ok...purchased a firewire - DV plug and now I can import videos !
However...I imported from a Windows program b/c for some reason Premier freezes upon opening. The "capture" screen comes up for some reason and sticks.
If I recall, the capture screen was not the default screen.
Anybody...anybody? Ferris???

Does Adobe have any patches for Premier that aren't installed?

It's stange b/c it was working for weeks. I just stopped working today. I edited several videos in it from disk and saved the projects.
Now when I start the program it jams on the capture screen.
I'm going to try a "repair" later when I get home.
