I recently bought a set of extension tubes off ebay and realized once I had already purchased them at what I thought was a steal, they are the non-dg version. I have a D50 and currently two lenses, a Tamron AF 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 Aspherical and a Tamron AF 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 Di LD Macro 1:2 (I have ordered a 50mm f/1.8D AF Nikkor, should be here soon).

I attached the tubes to both my lenses and I can get nothing to work in either AF or Manual mode. In my control panel on the camera, it flashes F-- in the aperture section (which the manual says means a non-cpu lens is attached). When I press the shutter I also see r04 in the 'exposures remaining' section.

So my question is, are these tubes not going to work with my camera, these tamron lenses, or even my new Nikkor lens.. or all of the above? or is there a setting or feature I have overlooked? I'm new to lenses, ordering and knowing what is right for my camera. The non-DG are for 35mm but I have read that they are very compatible with DLSR's and some people prefer them to the DG ones, just don't understand why I can't get them to work.

Thanks for any help!

The extension tubes must have the electrical contacts to let the lens you are connecting to it communicate with the camera. Without the contacts the only way the camera can operate is in manual mode without metering. I'm not sure as to why someone told you the non-DG versions were better unless they meant better build quality as the tubes are just that tubes.

Also be very careful getting the Kenko DG tubes off ebay, as I replaced my B&H purchased Kenko tubes that were stolen from ones off ebay and they were sub par. They had a lot of play in them and would often lose contact with the camera. They were either real Kenko rejects or a close clone, but have been replaced with reliable ones now.
