I know this is the standard, what camera should I get? type post but I would really appreciate some advice.
Basically I had a Nikon D50. I was very happy with it, I had it for over a year, my first DSLR and I've learnt a lot.
However it went missing/got stolen as a part of a missing bag just a few days ago and I've started looking at a replacement.
Since my lenses went missing with the camera I'm starting from scratch again (and I hadn't got many to begin with anyway) so I'm not tied into Nikon atm.
I like taking portraits, action shots (of my cat mostly) and street photography. I loved the old manual f1.8 50mm Nikon lens I had. It was very sharp and gave me great photos (when I got the focus right anyway).
What else to add, I found the auto focus too slow on the D50 to work with my action shots, I ended up 'solving' it by going on manual focus and getting a feel for exactly how far away from the camera the area of focus was and then snapping away when the moving object (kids playing, my cat leaping etc.) was the right distance away.
I have once played with a friend's Canon 20d and the options and buttons were confusing to me but I'm pretty certain I'd manage eventually.
My budget is currently low but basically I can save up a bit every month so the more expensive camera the longer I'll be without.
I'm tempted to just go and get a Nikon D40 since it's cheap and I can start shooting again asap but at the same time I had intended to get the Nikon D50 to learn and then upgrade and it feels like I should be upgrading now. I don't know.
Anyway all help and insight more than appreciated |

| Rent what you like for a day or two or buy and return/exchange until you find a camera to sleep with. |

I think it's time for you to go with the big boys now, switch to Canon. ..just kidding..
Have you taken a look at the Nikon D80? I think the autofocus system of the D80 is better than the D50 or D40 (11 vs. 5 vs. 3). It still shoots at 3fps though
For lens the Nikkor 24-120mm f/3.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR is a great walk-around lens...
Everything cost about $1370 from B&H
Sorry to hear that you lost your bag..

If you're comfortable with Nikon then that's a very good reason to stay with Nikon. Like you I find Canon cameras far more awkward than any of the other main brands - Canon cameras are good cameras, just not good for you or me. I still maintain that how the camera feels in your hand and whether the camera controls feel in tune with your brain is more important than anything you will see on a spec sheet.

I'm still deciding what to do.
The Canon 40d looks like it'd be pretty sweet for the action shots I like to do, however I am very comfortable with the Nikon interface and that is really important.
I'm sort of wanting the Nikon D200 but that means waiting a whole month or two longer without a camera than if I went for the D80. The D300 is coming out though which is a camera way too expensive for me but it might drop the prices on the others some more so maybe worth waiting for that.
I'm quite active on a few cat forums (my cat is a lot more internet famouse than I am) and I'm thinking of starting a print selling drive to try and raise some extra money.
I'm going to go out and get to try out the D80, D200 and Canon 40d, see how they feel. |

If you can wait a month, the D200 will drop once the D300 is available. (or at least it should) I would advise you to go with a D80 or D200 if you want to stay Nikon. If you want to go Canon, I'd get a 30D or 40D.
I'd stay away from a D40 or a Rebel. You should go ahead and upgrade. |

| I'm pretty sure at this point that I'll be upgrading to a D300. |

"I found the auto focus too slow on the D50 to work with my action shots"
:O
That can't be!!! Sooo, not true!!!!!!!! Were you using an AF-S lens!?!? If not, that maybe the reason.

Too slow or not accurate enough. It was an AF-S lens.
Of course that's while taking pictures of my cat running around in my living room so that the distance between her and me wasn't that great (2-3 meters) and she's very fast, need 1/125 shutter speed to not end up hopelessly blurred and around 1/250 to freeze the motion more properly. Maybe I was doing something else wrong but basically most of the photos I took of her with the auto focus were focused too far away. I.e the wall behind her was in focus and the cat out of focus.

I heard that Nikon camera is pretty cool. I had decided to get one. Recently I searched a lot online, and I found Nikon D80 is the one I like most, there are some great reviews
//www.ephotozine.com/article/Nikon-D80-1
And the lowest price I found is $1119
//www.dealstudio.com/searchdeals.php?deal_id=61814
Do any of you have any suggestions about the quality and the price? |
