I sent a bunch of PM's this week to people regarding a SF Bay Area GTG and learned this morning that by doing so...I invalidated any vote they may have given my Free Study (good or bad). That truly sucks!

I don't believe you are correct. There has been signficant discussion about this previously and as long as people voted your image according to an impartial standard, there is no way to invalidate their votes.

I didn't send any images re: entry in a PM...I sent PM's regarding a GTG in my area. I sent a "contact us" to the Site Council this morning and received a reply that those PM's would not invalidate any votes (good or bad) :)
Two team members helped me on advice re my entry but they agreed not to vote on it. I'm just trying to understand the rules so I don't mess up.

This is very confusing. Someone told you votes on your Free Study entry were invalid because you sent PMs about a get-together?
10/03/2007 01:18:05 PM · #884
Confusion rains. And reigns. I don't think just sending PMs violates any rules. Only if you send your image, a link to your image, a detailed description or image number of your image... otherwise, you can PM people all you want about just about anything. I do. :-) Though perhaps I should PM the entire site with the link to my Free Study so all voting on it can be invalidated....

If the SC's are really concerned about influenced votes, then they should make a policy that friend referrals are no longer accepted. In essence that would never happen. Can you really have an impartial system where self-portraits are common, fellow coworker/friends share photos, or links to personal websites in profiles.

Unless one is intentional trying to skew votes it really should be a non-issue.

It IS a non-issue. Maybe it got a bit buried in Eve's second post on this (quoted above), but she said that the SC told her "those PM's would not invalidate any votes."

The rules are quite straightforward: don't ask others to vote highly on your image. Another rule is: don't vote on any image you've had a hand in creating or editing.

Beyond that, there isn't even a rule against voting on an image where you know the photographer. It's just that if you make a habit of voting highly, you might get caught.

To be safe, though, not just from SC detection but from my own biases, I never vote on any entry I've seen beforehand.

But there's nothing wrong with contacting other people about non-challenge stuff. Heck, it's a community. That's part of the point!

Dips to the low 5s sometimes. I actually like this picture. Hopefully it stays above 5.

(and I was always paranoid as to whether I manually loaded the film properly...and had to wait for the contact sheets)

My first SLR is/was an old Canon Tlb which had a broken light meter. It is how I learned Sunny-16 (basic daylight exposure). I recently took the old camera out for two weeks. Haven't turned in the film yet, actually I'm scared too. The only bad thing thing now is the shutter sticks towards the end of the roll. Not sure if it worth fixing at this point.

What I prefer to do if I want someone's opinion is to offer an exchange.....that person give an opinionm on mine, and me theirs.....then we don't vote on each other's and it's equitable on both sides of the fence.

I prefer to contact a friend who'a not participating in the challenge, and specifically NOT voting at all and get his/her opinion.

It's an honor system, and as long as you use honor and common sense, it's generally not going to be a problem.

Agreed. :)

My own personal policy is that I do not vote on challenges that I have entered. That way no one can ever accuse me of a personal bias, and keeps me from voting by subconciously comparing what I am seeing to my own entry. (for meeting the challenge criteria etc)

I just find it works better for me that way. (not pushing it on others... it is just my own way of doing things...)

Yes..but I contacted the site council and did receive clarification. It's a non-issue for me now :)

I guess that even after all this time, I'm saying I haven't a clue what will work and what won't in this place, and that I'm just as unsure of what I enter as I was when I started. :-)

So just reporting in that my Half and FS are hanging at 5.6, but my Group Portrait entry is still:

Group Portrait

Avg Vote: 6.0569

Look at the votes & views numbers at less than 36 hours!

And I still don't know what to make of the votes/views ratio here:

What the.......?????

I feel like in a giving mood, I'll be handing out 3 subscriptions to B&W magazine. So all Team Suck member PM me on who you think should get a subscription (the person does not have to be on Team Suck, any DPC member can be chosen). I'll take the tally at the end of the month and 3 individuals will get a year subscription. Please PM though, selections should not be listed in thread (I'll lose count).

Cheers all.

I was tempted to nominate one of the voters/commenters who always says they don't like B&W (and thus vote images in B&W lower), but then decided it would be lost on them. I'll keep thinking.

Very nice gesture, Jayson.

So I want to do a combination of rant and being sad for the decline of the camera shops in my area.

There are two......and I have patronized both of them over the last 30 odd years, buying both cameras and lenses from both and using their services for custom work and enlargements.

I guess what saddens me is that I would think in these days of the Web, you'd think that the small shop who can't compete, volume-wise, would go out of their way to cultivate customers with value-added, personal service. I know I'd rather hold the camera/lens in my hand, kibbitz a little about the pros and cons, look at the new and improved, next best stuff, and make an occasion out of a purchase of new stuff, especially since, even though I'm low end DSLR, my purchases *still* amount to hundreds of dollars. So.....hold my hand, and talk nice to me, ya know? Pretend that I'm important and that you'd like me to come back and spend more money.

The first shop that cranked me was one that I went in, found a lens that I liked, reserved it, and then when I went in to talk to the woman I'd been dealing with, who was on the phone, the other people who worked there acted like I was an inconvenience 'cause I wanted to wait to talk to the same person that waited on me originally......they actually got kind of snotty with me, so I left. And I will NEVER go back.

So......on to the second shop.....same thing. I'm looking at a used lens.....it's a nice lens, and cheap, but when I saw the ding on the lens hood, and this was a superzoom with a long tube, I decided that I didn't want to chance it, so I asked to look at the other lens that was in the cabinet.

They got the box out, the lens is in the bag with its dessicant, the lens hood had obviously never been out of its bag, there were no mars on it, and the paperwork was all folded up and wrapped in the box like a new lens, which is what I *assumed* I was looking at.

They did nothing to allay this assumption, I bought this lens, took it home, but when my wife looked at the box, she noticed that the UPC seal was cut out of the box. I also couldn't find the warranty slip. So.....I look at the invoice, and sure enough......it says USED lens.

I feel used and abused. I don't feel like they were honest with me, and they also had something of an attitude as well like they didn't much care one way or the other if I bought anything from them.

So I won't.

So.....after trying to keep money in town, and also having failed miserably when I tried both times, with the D70s and the D40 kits to buy them from these shops, which neither of them could keep in stock, I give up. I see no reason to darken either of their doorways again.

Ritz camera, in the malls here have been helpful, courteous, and have had what I've needed when I needed it.

It just seems like a shame, and I won't have any sympathy if I ever hear of them going out of business.

Anyone else run into anything like this?
