As often happens, and more so recently, I come across excellence in photos, which, by my standards at least, have not received the attention they deserve. Sometimes their placement posted in the official challenge results coincides with my (personal) evaluation, sometimes there is distance. Occasionally, a gem has been subjected to severe 'oversight' and/or prejudices, whatever the voters' motivations may be.

To remedy this and to pay respect to those who have made my world a little richer by sharing their works, I want to post an alternate award after and for every challenge (or at least as many as I can handle).

Here are the winners (if I got the links right, this time):

Zeus' Top Pic(k)s: Oops!

1. Place

2. Place

3. Place

My comments on the respective images are posted, where they usually are, beneath the image.

I disagree on your top pic(k). If you need the title of the pic to help you understand the "oops" factor, it's not a 1st place shot.

Same with your 2nd place pick. I just don't "get it" by looking at the shot. Plus the shot is tilted to the right, not cropped well, and slightly out of focus.

Your 3rd place pick I really like however. I don't know if it warrants 3rd place but it's very funny and fits the challenge pretty good. I would have given this one a 7 most likely.

Did you read my comments on the respective pics, Chris? There I'm trying to provide reasons for my choices.

Literal topicality or close adherence to them are criteria which do not outweigh artistic merit here. Other views and practices are already well represented. :-) Thus the alternate choice.

Thanks Zeuszen!
I appreciate the vote of confidence! I predicted that this photo would not score well, but I submitted it anyway because I think it is alot of fun. Believe it or not, it was not staged. Jonah, my three year old, would much rather wear his underwear on his head than potty train right now (which is driving us nuts). I grabbed the camera when he did this, and being a little ham for the camera, he stopped and gave me a sheepish smile.
I have to agree with ChrisW123... I don't feel this image should have placed well in the challenge, but I'm glad you enjoyed the shot! I felt it would not score well because (1) it is a picture of one of my kids (2) natural window light is all that was used and the highlights are blown (3) I thought that people who have never potty trained their kids would just not get it!

Thanks again,
JD Anderson

No I didn't read them when I first commented. I based my comments on the pictures themselves. I don't like to read what others say, in advance, because I feel it'll effect my vote/comments on the image.

Great comments however, I did read them just now. I really like this thing you're doing with the "Zeus' Top Pic(k)s", it's fun to read and comment on, and it's great you're taking the time to do it!

I bet you a case of Heineken or a bottle of Beaujolais (or whatever it is you need to step out of your proximities) that, if you hung this shot with the best (and likely more solemn portraits, this one would fetch a few smiles, sincere ones at that. The smile is infectious. The moment... priceless. I was moved by it, and I'm weathered. :-)

Highlights blown?- I rather have a blown highlight, than miss an image like this. ;-)

Thank you again! Your original comment on the image was a joy to read. Photos like this are fleeting... One day soon, I will be looking back on these wondering how my kids grew up so fast! I will have thousands of images by then to remember. Not a day goes by that I don't get some shots of the kids in one way or another. I prefer the 'real world' shots like this, rather than the set up, clean shirt, clean face, say cheese portraits. Lots more where this one came from at my Pbase gallery (link below) if you care to see some more.
Thanks,
JD Anderson
