I'm sure this is a stupid question, but can I use the urban acid action in a basic challenge? And if not, does anyone know of a way to achieve a similar look without breaking the rules? |

if you use an action you need to look at what is being done. If any selections are made (and I'm guessing the chances are strongly yes), you can't use it...

Not sure if the action itself is against the rules but you can mimic the effect:
go to image-gradient map then dbl click on the gradient bar. You can go in there and change the colours. The urban acid seems to go for a dark torquoise base, going thru green and then to yellow.
It's easily done. However, I have no idea if what I just listed is legal in basic either :)

Not legal. Urban Acid is an effect filter, and those aren't allowed in Basic. You can shift colors (globally), but things like Urban Acid, Grunge, Draganizer, etc. are off-limits in BAsic. |

you can't use urban acid in basic but you can try to achieve the same effects by playing with curves. You have to go into each dialogue box (red, green, blue) and mess around. Two of them do just about the same look.
... unfortunately I forget which two :0P

I thought that Urban Acid was an action, not an effects filter. It creates a curves adjustment layer and a 'Muted Colors' layer. This latter is applied in 'Hue' mode and consists of a fill of solid black, hence would not be legal.
I would expect that the curves adjustment layer would be legal, so I would have imagined that one could run the action and delete the 'Muted Colors' layer and be OK.

Urban Acid uses layers in other modes than normal if I remember correctly. Asa matter of fact, I'm sure it uses a layer in saturation mode.

I looked at the action before posting above and it only created one layer in a mode other than normal. At least, using the version I've got installed here.

I only noticed the addition of one layer in 'Hue' mode. Honest.

And that layer was the muted colors layer? You're right, I remember. Yeah... and it doesn't look too bad without that layer. One could just put a Hue/Sat layer in place of the Muted colors layer and get similar results.
