I just discovered that, apparently, opening a 14bit RAW file from the 40D doesn't quite work with Photomatix for a quick HDR.
Gonna have to create a bunch of different exposures, at least for now, as far as I know.
Photomatix put out an update fairly recently. Will have to check if there's an update available for 14bit RAW files yet...

Convert to 16-bit TIFF in Photoshop and tone map that in Photomatix; works fine.

BTW, I believe it is version 2.5.3 and it has been available for about 2 weeks maybe...
