I use GIMP for my post processing work so the Photoshop based HDR programs won't work for me. I'd like to explore HDR. Would this program be a good one or is there another free one that's good? Thanks everyone!

I use GIMP to and I also have been interested in doing some HDR. I don't think to many people on here use GIMP, so I'm not sure how much help you'll get.

I have downloaded the windows version. Later tonight or tomorrow I will give it a try and let you know how it compares to Photomatix Pro, a $99 program.

You can download the photmatix trial and give it a try...it is one of the best IMO for HDR work.

Just gave it a try and seems to be nice...here is a test run.

original shot in RAW+JPG

loaded RAW and it said it couldn't find the EV value so I just put in I think -4. It processed it but it only looked darker than the original. I couldn't upload it here because of the format it saves in.

Then I tone mapped it with different settings till I got this one:

Yes it is a bit oversaturated and I noticed a lot of noise but I'm sure that is from the way I shot it.

I have used the trial version of Photomatix and like it, can't wait to buy it. I really like how the preview works within the tone mapping section. With this one you can only see end results, not previews but I previewed at a smaller size till I got what I wanted then processed at bigger size to save.

Good luck on it...Bear_music will have a MUCH better idea of how they compare.

I just downloaded this program a few weeks ago. I think photomatix would do a better job (or at least make it easier) but for a free program you can achieve good results. I created this image using it yesterday. I would recommend giving it a try. It is the best free one I have tried.
