well, ok. lightroom was chugging along all day but sometime this evening it hung itself up at 79% of the import process.
so, i quit and restarted and launched lightroom only to get this message: "Lightroom cannot use the catalog location you have chosen because it is located on a network volume." this is true, as it's on a box i use to store all of my files (i only have a laptop). it didn't tell me this when it created the catalog, however.
so, -1 from Lightroom.
the good news is that it appears that the catalog i started is intact. the bad news, is that it's about 500Mb and i have to copy it to my laptop to run the program to see if the catalog is ok.
because my server is automatically backed up, having my Lightroom catalog on my local machine means i'm going to have to set up some kind of backup process for it. but it also possibly means that i will have access to previews of my files when i am not on my home network. hmm.
it's got about 30 min to copy before i can launch lightroom again. i might try to wait up for it so i can get it cataloging again overnight.

I'm a world traveler... I left Germany for the Middle East in July, and will be here through January. Then I'll be back in Germany. :-) Check out the Desert Collection in my portfolio for exciting (?) pictures from Kuwait and Iraq. |

Im not very computer literate compared to most of you so I find some of this hard!
I have Microsoft Digital Image Pro which I have used for storing, cataloging and editing photos ( I find the librbary to be excellent but i have nothing to compare it to) . I then discovered that to upload through Digital Image changed the exif data so now sometimes I upload through the computer and moving the files into a folder but I kinda just have one big photos folder! Now to make it even more of a mess and confusing I have started using raw and viewing through adobe bridge which i find a bit tedious! As yet I havent used one of my raw photos for a challenge so havent had to change to jpeg or whatever I have to do.
I have apprxiantely 9000 on the computer and I reckon I should purge about 5000-6000.
I definatley need to have a big purge but also get a much better sysytem inplace of what I do when I upload the photos. |

ok, i've cataloged my My Pictures folder twice now. here are the file counts.
according to...
windows: 34,393
extensis portfolio: 31,047
adobe lightroom: 23,055 (!!!) (read below)
what's the deal with lightroom? why the huge discrepancy? i've not gone through every folder, but i'm going to. i'm wondering if it treats RAW+JPG as one file? thoughts?
update: in the lightroom preferences there's an option to "Treat JPG files next to raw files as separate photos" and mine is NOT checked. i think that means that i've got 7000 JPGs that it has "married" to RAW files. this might be easier than i thought.
update #2: i found one folder with some missing files. when i went to re-import it in lightroom, there was a checkbox on the dialog that says "Don't re-import suspected duplicates." AHA! lightroom is filtering out "suspected duplicates." while on the surface this is nice, i don't want the program making those decisions for me. what if i have three files that are a bracketed exposure? i want to see them all and judge them for myself. back to importing.
update #3: ok, after a recataloging, lightroom found 3000+ photos that it had "filtered out" for me before. sheesh. new lightroom total: 26,780. this seems about right to me, because i shot in RAW+JPG for a while while i was still getting used to RAW. so there are probably that many duplicate JPGs in there that lightroom has "married" to the NEF files.
final starting number: 26,780.

Probably would be a good idea to remind everyone to defrag their hard drives after the mass exodus. I myself am getting started today. Inspiring! |

purge project #1: quick-remove duplicates
ok, i know it sounds silly, but do you realize how many duplicate photos you have on your drive?
my plan was to blaze through all my folders dated the first year after i had my d70. i was too chicken to shoot in RAW alone, so i shot in RAW+JPG. now that i'm a RAW shooter exclusively, i don't need a single one of those duplicate JPGs.
in the process, i found a few folders that were entirely duplicates (one folder was in both "holidays" and "family", another folder of my bathroom remodel pics ended up copied in the midst of photos from a trip to KC -- ??). rather than wait until later to deal with them, i went ahead and nuked them now.
note that i made no judgments about photo quality or value. this was purely an exercise in trimming the fat. it took me about an hour, and was pretty easy with a football game going in the background.
windows file count at start: 34,393
windows file count at end: 27,843
6,550 files and 24Gb deleted!

way too many!!! especially those duplicated tiff files eat loads of space, some of those tiff's are over 200mb each (!!!), i think i gonna save/duplicate those as psd and delete the tiff files...

i think i will do it the other way around: kepp the jpegs and delete most of those raw files, at least for the files that definately do not need any pp...

that's one of my most serious problems, too. i think i have lots of copied files, that sit in different folders and "collections". i just don't know how to sort the files: the first year that i shot with my dslr i sort the files by having "galleries" like portrait, landscape and so on. the second year i've been doing it by arranging the files by the date (per month) taken. but now when i'm looking for a specific portrait for instance, i just can't remember when the heck it was taken...lol
it's a dilemma...:(

I'm going to give ACDSee Pro 2 a mention here. It's got very good and fast cataloging functions, and a useful 'find duplicates' tool. You can download a 30 day trial at that link. |

I downloaded the trial of Lightroom yesterday (had to grab it before I left Iraq, which strangely has far better internet connections than Kuwait, at least where I was/am) and will see if I can get it at least halfway figured out before I run out of time on it. (By the way, it's almost impossible to buy Adobe products in English at an American price if you are not physically located in the United States. But that's another story.)
I suppose I'd keep RAW and delete the dupe jpegs (I always shoot in RAW+jpeg - easier to see what you shot when you got home) but they're handy little things, those jpegs. I shoot small jpeg, though, so I'd still need the RAW...
Kinda wish I'd brought the backup harddrive with me so I could clean out my files! |

I have a copy of lightroom, at least I did before the move, now I just have to find it and install it. I'll give it a go. I'd like to hear more about keywording. I think that would help me a lot. As it is now, for the most part, I have a folder for all my original/unedited files, then I have a file for personal stuff... family, one for each son with subfolders for each month of the year, etc....
Then I have a folder for my "photography" things I edit for prints, for DPC, for photoblogs, clients, models, etc... and within those a folder for each month of the year. Problem is sometimes I edit something for a challenge say of my son and I forget to put it into his personal folder. When I go to look for it later, I have a hard time finding it. This is where keywording, I think, would come in very handy for me when I'm searching for such things.
Sooooooo, how do you keyword and when? In photoshop? Does lightroom do it? any other suggestions. I've only used keywording for shots that I've uploaded for stock. It never occured to me to use it for my personal stuff. Duh!! :)

so far i am finding that Lightroom is a dog. my laptop is less than 1 year old and has 2Gb of RAM and it is having a lot of trouble keeping up.
i find myself popping into bridge to load and edit my photos. it takes upwards of 10sec. just for the preview to clear up in Lightroom.
*sigh*

My update:
I've been slugging through all the stuff I shot at the beginning of the summer (starting in May), when I was in the field and away from a reliable monitor to do proper editing with. So far, I've culled at least half of my photos and am only at June 20th.
I'm mostly sticking to just exposure adjustments and keywording in Lightroom, then exporting twice: DNGs and 800px jpegs. I keep the original RAWs, but remove them from LR as I go along. For now, the originals stay in the root folder, with DNG, jpeg, and edit (for psd files) subfolders - I may change that around later. Everything gets double backed-up on my external 320gb drives, and I keep a copy of the proofs on my lappy for quick reference.
For naming, I've been going with a {yyyymmdd}_{location/event info}_{original file #} template, ie 20070603_princeton_8522.dng.
Thankfully, I've been diligent through September, so thats already done... but I have ~2000 RAW files, all with very different shooting conditions, work through still. Once I'm done all that, I may go even further back to the days before I shot RAW and see what I can do to clean up that mess... :-P |

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but I thought I'd pick it up rather than start a new one. How did this go for everyone? What were the best tools? The worst? I've known I need to do this for awhile, and have been reading about the best methods, but found none are intuitive for me. I import using folders named with the YYYY-MM-DD method, one subfolder for jpegs and one for RAW (I shoot in RAW+jpg). Here are my stats right now, with some minor culling having been done already and getting me back 10gb of space or so (my photos are in three locations, so thus the summary rather than details):
Size: 90.43gb
Files: 33,919
Folders: 1,043
When those of you who cull at import do that, do you do it based on full-sized versions or thumbs (I can't "see" thumbs well enough to know if I should keep or dump an image, which means to date I have had to look at each one individually in full-screen mode)?
So, is anyone from the original thread still doing this, or are you all done? How did it go and have you kept it up? How!!!!

my ... umm? whatever ... :-)
- using lightroom
- no special cataloging just by time line default and creating folders for months in PHOTO_ARCHIVE folder
- current month files always in my pictures folder
- 2 lightroom catalogs , one for current month and another for PHOTO_ARCHIVE
- PHOTO_ARCHIVE on 2 separate HD's synced every week with SyncToy, awesome awesome tool, try it !
- in PHOTO_ARCHIVE folders are sized to 4.3GB so i can burn them to DVD twice or "thrice" a year , naming is DVD001-DVDXXX (LOL)
- i have around 45GB of photos in little over 11000 files
- keep RAW files only for gems or whatithinkitsagoodphoto :-), so majority is jpg
- tiff's and psd's very rare, only left from editing or making them ready for printing
- using acdsee pro 2 for quick look
- using picasa for ... ummm, slideshow ?
- no keywords used, kinda heavy task on so many files, maybe as a new years resolution :-)
- i try to get rid of "bad" files on every import, so technically i'm pruning every time i do import ... which is cool i think :-)
that's it
others? rather interesting thread i must admit
