On the Canon 70-200f2.8L IS USM, there are two modes for stabilization -- 1 and 2.

What is the difference? and when should each be used/not used?

1 is for all purpose stabilization, i.e. horizontal and vertical.
2 is for use while panning. It provides vertical IS but not horizontal.
