If I have a Vivitar strobe wired to camera through PC outlet, will my 430EX fire in slave mode when it sees the light from the Vivitar?
How does that all work and is there any delay? |

I don't think the 430EX has a slave mode for optical triggering. My understanding is that it can only be triggered through Canon's IR system, meaning you'd need a 580EX or the IR controller.

I would have to agree with this statement, these are the only ways I have figured out of to get teh 430 to slave up.

You can make it fire off of the other flash's light but you'd need to buy an optical slave attachment which will mount on the flash's hot shoe. It would work in full manual mode and the only delay would be the time it takes for the light to reach the slave's sensor which, at the speed of light, should be next to nothing.
Edit to add: The optical slave would be a LOT less expensive ($50?) than either a 580EX or the ST-E2 transmitter. Another option would be to get a Sigma EF500 DG super flash unit, it functions nearly the same as the 580EX.

Yup, what everybody else said. However, you could use an Optical Slave Trigger attached to your 430. I've never used these though, I use the St-E2, but the price is right on these.
Oops, too late.

The 430EX makes a great slave flash. I almost always have mine in manual mode and then trigger either with a ST-E2 or a $24 optical slave. I bought the ST-E2 and 430EX so I would have the option of using Canon's flash control system, but 90% of the time I find it easier to just leave each flash in manual so I have full control.
