I am putting a thermostat for our multi-stage heat pump upstairs. This summer I installed a direct vent gas fireplace downstairs and plan on heating the area where we "live" 80% of the time with that. I wanted an upstairs thermostat so as to keep the upstairs at a minimal temperture (like 62). I'm actually having some trouble finding the proper thermostat that can control my furnace.
One question. I bought a thermostat that is good for a single stage heat pump. If I install it upstairs, would I simply be missing out on the auxillary heat? (The pump has W1 and W2 wires, the thermostat only has a single W wire insert.) |

So you are heating the downstairs with the gas fireplace? Does that have a thermostat?
I would think that when heating your downstairs with the gas fireplace, alot of heat should be making its way upstairs and I don't know if you would need a thermostat up there (unless it controlled the fireplace).
If the thermostat that is donwstairs is somewhere away from the fireplace, I would set that to about 60-62, then just bump it up a little at a time until it is comfortable upstairs (or take a thermometer up there).
My house is usually 62 (so pipes don't freeze) in the winter, burn a fire when home, wear sweat clothes and just have a small heater in the bathroom for a shower when I get up.

The fireplace will not be strong enough to heat the whole house. The thermostat downstairs, however, is within the range of the fireplace. I also have a remote thermostat for the fireplace which will be used to control the downstairs temp.
The idea behind having an upstairs thermostat is to keep the upstairs from getting too cold. If I relied on the downstairs thermostat, I don't think the heat would ever kick on (with it picking up the heat of the fireplace) and the upstairs might get below 60 on a cold day.
Any other opinions on the multi-stage problem? |
