I work in Cleveland. As I drive to work, I'm sometimes looking for subjects that might meet a DPC Challenge. There's usually something to photogrpah, be it a dilapidated building, a city character, or something on the lake.

Today I drove past a "sweet" character sitting on the steps of a porch on one of the side-streets of east downtown Cleveland. As I drove I stared as I passed by her. She looked relaxed, content and confident. She held a damaged dark grey umbrella, spinning it a bit even though she was in the shade. She was wrinkly, smoking and friendly looking (yet a tad intimidating). She met the DPC criteria for a high scoring image ;P ... She watched me, it seemed as I passed, saying "here I am". I didn't really think about it 'til I got to work ...

Excuses: I would have needed the speedlight. I had the 10-20 mm and I didn't really want to distort this so I'd need to change lenses.
I was late already.
I don't like to exploit people - but I think she was a character worth sharing with the world if she was willing to stay in this pose and permit me to photogrpah her.

Feel free to post your missed ops here. I suppose it would be pretty boring if I say no pics but it only makes sense ;)

We rented a cabin in the mountains last spring and one morning we were out driving around and suddenly a huge herd of elk came through a field and started crossing the road. There must have been at least 50 of them. We stopped the car to watch them and they all started jumping a fence on the other side of the road. It was this perfectly beautiful morning with a beautiful backdrop and all these elk gracefully jumping the fence. It would have been THE most amazing photo, but of course, idiot that I am, I had left the camera back at the cabin. I still think about the great photos I could have gotten that morning!!

Then the other day I looked out my window and there was a squirrel crammed into my squirrel resistant bird feeder, trying desperately to steal the bird seed, lol. That would have been a hillarious photo, but he ran off before I could grab my camera. All the really great moments seem to happen to quickly for me to get my camera out!!

One day I looked out my window and saw the whole sky had gone pink and red.. I ran out with my camera and noticed that the local plane school people were practicing.. they were leaving trails all over.. I opened my camera and pressed the shutter.. but nothing happened.. My battery died.. A few weeks later the sky went back to the wonky shades it had been showing earlier... I looked out the window and was totally shocked to see what the planes were up to this time... I very nearly didn't get my shot.. But in the end the result was .. My missed opportunity led to another which was a few times better then the first.. and yes I'm breaking the no pics rule.. :P

two of late ...
1) earlier in the summer leaving work .. traffic was backed up real bad so went in the opposite direction / click on the radio & heard that a cement truck had lost its barrel on a connecting road some time earlier..
drove right by it .. could see it .. didn't stop... :(

2) driving home from holidays late aug. (everybody was up & out of the hotel by 5:30 for a 14.5 hr drive .. we are cruel to our kids ..) sun was rising in N.Ontario, really great think fog, everybody (but me) asleep in the car ... could have had many fog & forest shots .. .
sigh ..

The ONE time I don't bring my camera with me.

First, we live in a city. In the evenings, we usually drive to a park, lets the kids run off some energy. I always bring my camera but for some reason, this one time I didn't. Well, kids played for a while, started getting dark so we packed it in and left the park. As we were waiting at a red light to drive off, a mother deer with her two fawns came out of the trees. The fawns came right up to my window. They were fearless, and the mama was just standing there. It was just one of those amazing moments - two speckled fawns, mother in the background, just watching, sun setting behind the trees making just beautiful light.

And no camera.

It's been over a year ago, and it still hurts.

Working in the garden a year or so ago and left the spade in the ground while I was using a fork on some of the soil. Glanced back at the spade to see a robin perched on the handle, about a yard away from me. So close and so clear, it was a ChristMmas Card kind of image.

Started talking to it and after about 10 minutes noticed it was happy for me to move about so went for my camera. Took 5 minutes to find camera before I realised it was in the conservatory, where I left it in case there was a good bird shot or two...

Walked out feeling bad and - joy of joys- the robin was still there! RElated, I rushed in to get the found camera - and scared the bird off! Waited all afternoon for it to return but it never did...
