I have this #%$@&%$#$@ dialup and for some unbeknownst reason, suddenly I cannot upload anything into my portfolio.

I can enter challenges, but every time I try to upload into my portfolio, it times out.

I have *NO* other option......believe me when I tell you that I'd commit unspeakable acts to be able to get cable or DSL here, but I won't cough $1000 down and $100 a month for satellite that is sketchy at best here because of living in the woods on the side of a mountain.

I just do not know what to do, and trying to talk to tech support is ridiculous, because I have *NEVER* had an issue with a dialup problem that has ever been able to be dealt with over the phone.

They always want to walk me through all the stupid basics, and I don't have two hours to go through umpteen people who have English as a second language only to finally come to the decision that they cannot do anything anyway.

This is frustrating beyond my bleakest imaginings.

Does anyone here know computers well enough that could possibly guide this numbskull through a process where I can check to see that whatever my computer is doing during the upload process is optimal?

I notice that it seems to only upload a couple bytes at a time and that it seems to stall readily.....it just seems to quit sending data unless I'm downloading at the same time.

Is there something I can do to optimize how my computer sends data?

I have the file I've been trying to upload down to 100KB and it still times out.

Jeb- How much free space do you have in your portfolio? Could it be that your allowed space is full?

Interesting....

I just upgraded since I renewed, and I have 1000MB of space total....

Funny thing, though.......it's only since I've gone over the original 50MB that I've had problems.

I think that's coincidental, though......isn't it?

It shows that I've only used 5.02% of my available space on my bar graph.

Should I dump a pic or two and free up space below that original 50MB as a test?

I think so, then if you can upload, send a message to Langdon to have him fix the issue...

SH*T!!!!!!!!

I just randomly tried another image and it went!

The two I've been trying to upload are both B&W......is there any reason to think that could be a problem????

The color one I just uploaded is 179KB......the last B&W image was 100KB.

The smaller one shoulda gone, eh?

Generally upload speeds are slower than download speeds. But for the sort of problem you're having there are loads of possibilities, so it's really difficult to narrow it down to one;

- The DPC server might be having slowdown problems at the time you're trying to upload

- Some router along the way, or the server you connect to at your ISP might be having bandwidth issues

- The connection between your PC and your ISP may not be optimal (when you dial-up, what sort of speed do you get, and is it the same every time?)

The type of file you're sending shouldn't really make much difference. Although larger files are more likely to time-out because it takes longer for them to send and there's a higher chance something will happen to interrupt the upload.

I've been trying since Tuesday evening......and at weird times like the middle of the night when most of the US users are asleep.....as well as other times during the day.

I've tried different dialup numbers that are located in different areas....still within a 50 mile radius, but serving slightly different metro areas, so I figure there are different routers.

It's VERY consistent, albeit low-33,600, generally with NO variation. Once in a blue moon I'll get a really slow 12,500, but that's been less than ten times since I've lived here.......I just disconnect and reconnect immediately and it's fixed.

I really do try to eliminate the usual dumb stuff.......I'm most likely to be guilty of that.

I've also been doing this long enough that I try numerous variations in my process of elimination before I assume that there's a problem.

The problem with the wilderness locale where I live is that the connection is tenuous at best......rain affects my ability to even hook up if it's been going on for more than a day.

I'm just really frustrated this time 'cause it's never been this bad in the two years I've lived here.......and I haven't changed up anything in my computer hardware or software-wise.

Just out of curiosity, why can I upload to challenges with no problem?

I actually submitted/unsubmitted four times during this scenario and nary a problem.....just to test.

My son moved to a mountain near Pigeon Forge Tn, and thought that he could not get high speed net there, but found that Sprint mobile has a gadget that connects his computer to the net using the cell signal system there. It's about the price of regular DSL. The hardware is a little antenna that plugs into a usb port. Maybe they have the same available where you are.
It works about the same as land line DSL.
Going thru withdrawl? Is that a southern thing? Well, don't get the DT's. (digital traumas)

While I do appreciate the help, bear in mind that I know more about my problem than the providers do.

First.....I'm in one county......but my mailing address is in another county.

My phone service has a prefix from a town ten mile away.

The county line split is at a line where two different cable companies, and two different phone companies draw a line in the sand and will not cross it.

The cable/phone companies that will/should service me, but really don't (See original dialup b*tch!) have to cross a patch of state game lands and the Appalachian Trail, therrefore giving them a convenient out for upgrading my service even into the 1980s.

Here in Pennsylvania, there really is no statutes or utility company standards that say that modern service must be provided.

And basically, since there isn't a formal written request from 200+ homeowners in the area pleading for service, they don't give a rat's ass.

There are probably two dozen higher end homes up here thayt would be good for $75-$150 a month in revenues for a cable company, and we even asked for an estimate so that we could possibly see if the neighbors would be interested in splitting the cost of having the cable run in, but they just do not seem to want to help.

And the phone company's stance is simply that we have phone service, so what's the problem?

It really stinks.

BTW, I have narrowed it down to the fact that it has been these three files that I've been trying to upload......I don't understand why, but they just won't go, even at 60-100 KB.

I'm not sure what to do.

Maybe they are not jpg format, or there may be a glitch from resizing them that does not show up on your computer. Start with the larger file, reduce it again, and try uplaoding. I am happy that you have found that it isn't a major hardware or software problem.
