ive been pondering getting a newer camera for the past 3 months and have been really contimplating getting the mark II for its blazing 8fps ability. i shoot alot of surf and night sports such as football and have also shot some soccer on occasions. i was also taking in to my consideration, the 5d, due to the full frame affect. i love the overall outcome and love the cameras amazing range. although it has a meager 3fps same as my xti, i get a pretty good result of pictures. i understand that the 8 fps would solve any worrys of missing the shot, but should i be totaly transfixed on fps, or should i go with full frame. there is also the possiblity of a 40d.
40d: mix of fps, low $, same body style as 5d
5d: full frame
mark II: fps, smaller sensor than 40d, |

Honestly its sounds like the 40D is the perfect fit for you now--
6.5 fps, still get that extra reach with your lenses (1.6), its weather sealed somewhat..
For what you shoot, I dont think the 5d is appropriate --

Full frame has 2 real benefits - super low noise performance for great super enlargements, and thin DOF. So, they are ideally suited to studio setups, big enlargements, serious professional work for HQ print media, and low-light work where quality is really important (i.e. serious wedding work).
For sports, the fps is probably the most important feature. The decision between the 40D and the MKII comes down to cost of the body, plus the fact that you are going to have to buy lots of really top quality longer lenses to make the MKII worthwhile. On your 400D, your 200mm is equiv 320mm for a MKII.

I think you have fuzzy math. The 1DMKII has a 1.3 crop factor giving a 200mm lens an Effective focal length of 260, on the 400 its 320.

am I right in saying you are both wrong, and that the focal length is exactly the same but full frame just covers more area? |

Yeah the MKII will need slightly longer glass then the 40D due to the 1.3 vs 1.6 crop (focal length stays the same).
For night sports, I think the MKII would get a lot better shots because of the vastly better focus system. If you do that a lot then that is the best tool; I would pick the 40 over the 5D for what you describe.

Thanks for the correction. I thought the 1D was FF, but I realised since then that you are right. I came back to this thread to correct it, but it's already been straigtened out. :)

| yeah the 1Ds series has full frame, and the 1D series has a 1.25x crop sensor which canon rounds to 1.3x. |
