I'm sure that this has been asked a hundred times by different people on here, but since I don't see a search feature in the forums I figured I'd ask it again. Like many people on here I have my own website, with images of mine and with prints that I am trying to sell. However its been a bunch of months and I'm still not selling anything. I have my website on a bunch of search engines like google, yahoo, and a few others. I've also posted to some photo search engines and sites. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions of other places that I could advertise my website without spending much money. Also if anyone wants to exchange links with me to their websites that would be great too.
My website is Perpetuality
//perpetuality.com
Any feedback would be great.

The main balloon on the front page looks like a link but isn't. First thing I would do is set it up as one. Second the text Photography, Graphics, and design should be roll-over (ie change when the mouse is placed on them) so people know that is where to click. Third if you are trying mostly to sell pictures I would have a random picture on the front page. (change it daily or pull it randomly).
This is just a few basics things I find from my single sample usability test. (ie I went to the site and was clicking where I shouldn't have and when took me several tries to find where I should click to get what I was looking for). Finally the the site colors change going from the front page inside. This can lead people to think they have gone off the "main" site.
Get a book on the important of the order of pictures in a porfolio (that is essentially what you web site is) and consider changing the order of the pictures to bring a strong impact.
I hope this gives you a few ideas, and remember take everything with a grain of salt. Especially since I have not done up my own photography website at the moment. :-)

I had that same thought about posting a random image whenever someone comes to the site, but I don't know how to do it. I know I need to add a pearl script, but I don't know how to code them. Have any suggestions where I can get get ready made scripts.

You don't need Perl for that - you can use Javascript or DHTML
Here's two resources to try out:
Dynamic Drive
Javascript Source
Between these two sites you should come up with something that will work on your site.
I agree with C-Fox - you should keep consistency in your page colors and backgrounds... Hope this helps you. |

Code example here This is javascript and just put it in the html page. Don't need to worry about doing perl. Here is another example that uses pretty much the same techinque Here. That should get you going. If you are still confused go to google and type "Javascript image random" the first 10 hits all give example code all with more or less instructions. |

Thanks for the links to the scripts. They look to be exactly what I need. Any other suggestions out there?

I also have a website that just went up that you can check out //www.pixelpleasures.com. However, I put it up there to aid my customers that I already have so they can go and browse my new editions. I do not think that web photo sites do a lot of business on the blind. It is my contention that the only way you do business on the web is when people you tell go there. I made up business cards on my computer with my website and other pertinent info and I give them to everyone. Hopefully, in enough time your name will get passed around enough to make sales. |

To some degree you are correct sonny. However, in time, if a site is coded well and being picked up by the search engines to deliver your site to 'qualified searchers' you will get 'blind business'. The key though is 'qualified searchers'. If your site is being delivered to people not looking for the product or service you offer, you won't get the traffic. This is the hardest part of internet marketing. But it is possible with time and patience.
