I'd be rich if I were making the pay I am now!

When I was born, my mom bought a newspaper and saved it. I just turned 30 and she gave it to me for fun to see how times have changed. It was pretty interesting to see what was being talked about and the prices of things. This year on my birthday I bought The Washington Post so in 30 more yrs I can open it....if i'm alive.

1977

1 lb. hamburger...79 cents! today about $3-$4
Listerene........89 cents! today about $6
Brand New Renault......$4,388!

Ritz Camera Ad:

Quantary 80-200mm macro focus zoom.......$129.95
Canon G-111 17...........................$114.95
Pentaz w/ 50mm f1.7 lens.................$259.95

It didn't have a real estate section but that wouldve been neat to see the prices of homes.

If it were 1977 my job wouldn't exist.

Mine would be, but i'd have to use paper! My company was stuck on paper til the late 1990's. Only because it's an inconvenience to carry around typewriters. The government can be so cheap sometimes....

Mom would be dragging me out of church for grabbing the feet of the people sitting in front of us. I think it's the year too that I shit in pants trying to squeeze my butt cheeks while walking my bike back to the baby sitter, didn't make it, and walked around with crap in my pants for a couple of hours until until Mom showed up.

Bad year for Mom that 1977.

I expect the shopkeepers (and the Secret Service) to get mighty interested when you start passing money with some funny dates on it ... ;-)

1977

The Top News Story of 1977
- US admits 10,000 Boat People from Southeast Asia
Headlines in 1977
- Huge power failure causes a New York City blackout
- Israel elects Menachem Begin prime minister.
- President Sadat of Egypt visits Israel
- Terror attacks in Northern Ireland intensify

Life and Times in 1977
The average yearly income in 1977 was $13,572. When James E. Carter was President, a house cost $48,800. Milk was 97 cents a half gallon, 10 lbs. Of potatoes cost $1.40 and $1.55 would bring home the bacon. Back then we could buy a loaf of bread at the supermarket for 49 cents.

Sad, but times are not much different, other then the cost of things. There's still fighting in the middle east, and threat of terror attacks.

1977, the year I started college.
I shared a brandnew 4 bedroom townhouse with 4 other girls.
Two baths, basement with laundry, dishwasher, furnished, all dishes etc., etc., EVERYthing new, for the tremendous sum of $90/mo plus phone.

Draft beer was 50 cents, a pack of 25 smokes, 75 cents, a cup of horrible vending machine coffee, 25 cents. Don't ask how much the schooling/textbooks were, I only remember the important stuff! :)
(Though I see my "fresh water fishes of Canada" was $12.75, and it was one of the biggies...)

Eta; I seem to recall this was about the time that minimum wage was about $2.50)

September 19, 1977 I started my first real job with ITT. A few days ago would be 30 years if my job hadn't been outsourced in September 2001. Hope that new middle class guy in China is enjoying it. ;)

Ahhh to be 21 again! Party all night and sleep a couple of hours
and be ready to do it all again!
