I was looking to see if i could find a lens for mySony DSC-H9 and all I saw they had was this... Sony VCL-DH1774 Telephoto Lens 1.7x For Cyber-shot® DSC-H7 or DSC-H9 Digital Camera. Anyway, I couldn't find any reviews on the lens, and I am not sure exactly what purpose it serves, is it worth the 115 bucks? Thanks in advance for any input.

I don't have any experience with the camera or the add-on lens so take everything I say with a liberal dose of salt.

Your camera doesn't have interchangeable lenses like an SLR does, so you can't actually use a different lens - all you can do is put some other optics in front to alter the way your existing lens behaves.

The 1.7x telephoto lens would simply turn your lens into a stronger telephoto (long-distance/narrower field of view). At the moment, your lens has a field of view equivalent to a 31-465mm lens (slightly wide-angle to very strong telephoto); adding the attachment lens would make that 53-800mm equivalent field of view (normal perspective to EXCEEDINGLY strong telephoto). It's still acting as a "15x zoom", just a different sort of 15x zoom.

If I had to guess, I'd suspect that it would come at the cost of poor image quality - you're likely to get more distortion, chromatic aberrations (coloured fringes around objects) and probably a lot less sharpness. A 15x zoom already compromises on optical quality to accommodate the wide range of focal lengths, so you'd be exacerbating those compromises.

Thank you so much for you help. I tried to get my husband to buy me the SLR (it was only a couple hundred more, plus the lenses, hehe), but I couldn't convince him. Your insight really does make sense, and I was kind of thinking the same thing. I think rather than buying this lens (which is only around 100 dollars anyway), I will continue to save and buy the lighting set that I really want. Thank you again!
