I've seen the various raw processors (i.e. Bibble, PhotoShop, RawShooter Essentials) and I'm just wondering if anyone has thrown DxO Optics Pro into the mix for comparisons?
I personally am using PhotoShop since upgrading to CS. The workflow is great... no intermediary "processed" file, you just go straight from RAW into PhotoShop.
I keep wondering what I am missing... are the others any better? Better enough to outweigh the convenience of CS?
Of all that I've read, DxO Optics Pro (especially v3.0 beta) stands out as being "different" but is it worth the cost?
What does everyone think?

I don't think so. Get PANORAMA TOOLS. It's free.

Anyone manage to download the free trial? It's been unavailable today for some reason.

Actually, I've tried it on some images and I have to say that it's quite impressive. It uses really accurate lens data about distortion and known issues to correct your images, that's why at the time I tried it, I had to download a specific version for my body and lens.
Give it a try, it's quite good. I'd wait for the upcoming Apple Apperture (assuming that you have a mac ;)

I've purchased both DxO Optics Pro and now the new RawShooter Premium. I like *both* for very different reasons.
If you had to have just one ... go for RSP. I love the integrated levels and curves ... and the speed of RSP compared to DxO is absolutely amazing.
I really like DxO's quality and especially it's ability to correct lens distortion. But the speed sucks big time - at least, after you get used to RSP. And the workflow feels clunkier than RSP.

Richard Rosenmann's "Lens Corrector Pro" can handle all the lens distortion issues at a fraction of the price of DxO. No need to buy DxO for that feature alone...

Yes, but ... you use it "manually" right? I mean ... you have to dial in the amount of correction you want.
DxO has analyzed many brands of cameras and lenses and has modules that are custom made for each. Sure, that means it doesn't work on a camera or lens that they haven't tested yet ... but they've got mine covered. And so the amount of correction applied is according to extensive testing with equipment ... rather than being based on what I think I should "dial in" with a PhotoShop plugin.
Plus, I like that I can point it to a bunch of images and let it run. It knows what lens I have on the camera (from the EXIF data) and performs the changes automatically for me.
BTW, I bought DxO after the recent "huge drop in price". Now you get all of the lens modules instead of having to pay for each one separately.
Anyway.... of the two, I use RSP more than DxO, so I shouldn't argue too much. But when I want a really accurate RAW conversion, I go back to DxO.

True enough. Although when I used it for my Coolpix 5700 I just took note of the correct "settings" for that lens and typed 'em in, easy to do. Not a bulk processor, that's for sure. Don't need it anyway with the 20D. none of my lenses show visible distortion.

I downloaded and installed the trial version of DxO Optics Pro, but ...
...when I try to import with it, it hangs Photoshop with a message "Waiting to Import." and it consumes about 95% of my CPU doing nothing.
Has anyone had this problem? How did you overcome it?
For the record, I uninstalled, re-downloaded (300MB), and reinstalled it. I've been through the faq. I've studied the trouble shooting guide. I copied the appropriate dll and plugin files to the places they were supposed to go. I'm stuck.
Same result in PS CS2 and CS3.

The only way that I have used DxO is to have DxO process and export the files ... usually to 16-bit TIFF (most of the time, if I'm using DxO I'm going for a very large very high quality image).

Understood, but in order to do that DxO has to run. It won't run on my PC (2x3.2MHz cpu's, 4G RAM, 410G DASD, nVidia 256M Graphics card, Win XP Pro). If I try to run it standalone, it starts but never opens the UI. If I try it from inside Photoshop I get the error message above.
Any ideas ... it's probably something simple or something I'm doing wrong.

Okay, now that sounds frustrating! Especially for what DxO costs. I'd contact tech support if I were you. I had them help me out with an issue recently dealing with my video card. Their turn around time wasn't bad, I think less than 24 hours.

I contacted them a few days ago via email. Just got a response back, today, Sunday. They suggested an obscure registry change. I backed up my registry, made the change, and it seems to have fixed the problem, both stand-alone and w/i Photoshop. Apparently it did no collateral damage. Thanks.
